What Students Would Change About VHHS

**The media below contains the opinion of an individual student and therefore does not represent or speak to the values of Vestavia Hills High School and Vestavia Hills City Schools**

If you could change one thing about VHHS, what would it be?

A rather vague question, I posed this question to multiple students interested to hear what they would say. Although there were some “obvious” answers—the bathrooms, the AC units, and the parking situation—there were some pretty creative ideas. So here are some ideas that VHHS students suggested to improve the school:

School environment:

Get a working AC!

Standardize the temperatures in each classroom. Outlaw classrooms at temperatures below 50℉.

Improve the courtyard.

Use the outside garden more often.

Go outside more often for classes!

Give students the opportunity to decorate the hallways with banners, posters, etc.

• Renovate the bathrooms in certain halls and the Senior Patio.

• Add more greenery to the halls and the classrooms.

Make the students clean the bathrooms.

WiFi should work in the lunchroom.

There shouldn’t be holes in ceilings.

Larger and newer band room.

Students should respect the campus and the school environment more.

Classes Offered:

Partner with University of Alabama at Birmingham for Dual Enrollment classes

• Offer AP Physics C Mechanics and AP Physics C Electricity and Magnetism. Teach a Physics and Calculus class.

Allow freshmen and sophomores to take more junior and senior-level classes (AP courses).

Enlarge the Computer Science Department and offer more computer science classes, other than AP Computer Science Principles.

Add more fun classes: Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS), home economics, cooking classes, etc.

Include a class (not necessarily mandatory) on life skills, specifically taxes, time management, dealing with loans, etc.

Some classes should be better advertised, so that students know that they are offered

Offer IB classes?

Classes/Clubs Format:

Enforce the even/odd days for testing dates.

Ensure that tests aren't worth a lot more than the homework.

More class pets!

More club meetings.

Funding for extracurriculars should be based on success and not popularity.

Offer certain AP exams online instead (digital AP’s)

Administrative:

Have the school administration (especially the principal and the assistant principals) see and work with the student body more outside of class meetings.

Make the dress code less restrictive and the requirements more specific (especially with what outfits are considered dress code, and what isn’t)

Require a uniform? Maybe not?

Don’t take away the pep rally themes.

Teach hallway and walking etiquette.

Probably won’t happen?:

• Pizza/Pizza crunchers every Friday?

• Don’t give seniors homework during college application season?

• A nap room during the free period? Offer a napping class!

Longer weekends? No school on Mondays? No school on Fridays?

Have the students been in charge of school?

More Taco Tuesdays!
