From November 23rd to December 1st, the students of Vestavia Hills High School enjoyed a much-needed Thanksgiving break. With 9 full days open for sleeping in, exam prepping, or traveling, each student had a unique Thanksgiving break.
Many seniors spent time over the break completing college applications and scholarship forms. With December approaching and deadlines nearing, Thanksgiving break was the perfect week to relieve the pressure of these due dates.
Some students spent the break traveling, with many heading to Lake Martin or Smith Lake for some chilly hours on the water. Some students even traveled across the Atlantic and Pacific to visit other continents and enjoy long-distance reunions. However, for most of us, the break was a period of hosting family members from other cities and states.
Although it is the perfect time to feel grateful for our closest relationships, the break was not spent solely with family. Many enjoyed Friendsgivings with groups of VHHS students, and multiple birthday parties occurred over the span of the week. Friends got together to catch up following the long, busy school weeks of October and November.
For the specific day of Thanksgiving, families turned from hosts to guests. A majority of questioned students visited their grandparents’ homes for the special meal of traditional Thanksgiving cuisine, consuming turkey, chicken, cranberries, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie. In some homes, Thanksgiving cuisine was blended with cultural dishes for a unique family celebration.
Following the day of Thanksgiving, families turned to the eventful weekend of football to keep themselves entertained. The final weekend of regular season college football held many exciting fixtures, especially the hometown rivalry of the Iron Bowl.
