Every year, Vestavia Hills High School’s theatre department performs a fall and spring show. This year’s fall show was an adaptation of a classic: The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Hours of dedication and hard work were put into their performance for the Alabama Trumbauer Theatre Competition (you can read more about it here) and the three school productions before Thanksgiving break.
The show begins with Isaac Johnson’s narration in beautiful French. Isaac plays the part of an aviator stranded in the Sahara desert. He later meets Natalie Turnage’s character, the little prince (you can read more about it here). In the act of the aviator’s discovery of the planet where the little prince came from, the audience can resonate with the idea of how the older one gets, the more realistic one becomes and tends to disregard the romantic aspects of life. The little prince tells a story of his travels.
Reagan Kessler plays the little prince’s beloved rose. We discover that the little prince left his plant because the rose he loved dearly became too vain and demanding.
On the other planets, the little prince later meets a king played by Shay Lindsay, a conceited woman played by Riley Hinson, a businessman played by Jalen Oliver, a lamplighter played by Cameron Ginn, and a geographer played by Dana Cheek. They all live alone on their planet and are consumed by greed and the need for domination. The little prince begins missing his rose as he is informed by the geographer that flowers do not last forever.
On Earth, the little prince discovers that the rose is not a unique type of flower, and he meets a snake played by Katherine De Buys on 11/17 and 11/19 and Ellie Hoar on 11/18. The snake offers him a way back home after noticing his weak state on Earth. He then meets a fox played by Dakota McGrew. The little prince tames the fox to establish a special relationship. The little prince realizes that despite the rose not being a unique type of flower, she is special because of the nurturing relationship they share. The prince makes this discovery after learning the fox’s secret: “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eyes.”
Back in the desert, after the discovery of a well, the little prince decides to return home back to his rose. He teaches the aviator the fox’s lesson and hopes whenever the aviator looks at the stars he will be reminded of the little prince. The aviator ends the play by asking the audience to let him know if they ever spot the prince.
