The student body at Vestavia Hills High School is notorious for its enthusiasm and school spirit. Homecoming week—from the school-wide and grade-wide dress up themes, to the 52-10 win against the Chelsea Hornets, to the homecoming dance—was no different. A prime example, the Homecoming pep rally, included performances from, and appreciation for, more than just our beloved football team.
To open, Just Singin' performed a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem conducted by Mr. Stricklin. Following that, SGA Chaplain Campbell Brown gave a speech about the importance of working together for a common cause, which unified the student body. After a chanting competition between all of the grades and the band, the following fall sports were recognized, along with their seniors:
Flag Football (8-1)
Volleyball (26-6)
Swim and Dive
Cross Country (boys in 3rd, and girls in 4th in their last two competitions, which included statewide and out-of-state competitors)
After this moment of appreciation for the incredibly talented athletes at VHHS, our Homecoming Court was announced.
Freshman: Anna James Litty and Meredith Robison
Sophomores: Blakely Ferguson, Kate Hurst, and Madelyn Wigley
Juniors: Evan Reese Lyas, Emily Watson, and Sophie Williams
Seniors: RyleyAnn Graham, Kate Leyden, Kaylee Rickert, Alex Rountree, and Lotte Wambsganss
Then, the following Homecoming King Nominees were praised for their contribution to the fall charity: Grayer Manown (freshman nominee), Leighton Downey (sophomore nominee), Charlie Ingram (junior nominee), Ethan Sparks (senior nominee), and Luke Pappalardo (band nominee). And, as announced at the pep rally, our 2022 Homecoming King is Luke Pappalardo.
Following these exciting events and reveals, the Rebels kicked off the most energy-packed part of the pep rally, which featured performances from both Basketball Cheer and Varsity Football Cheer.
After these shows, the game was announced. The dance-off was quite an exciting one for the audience. It featured songs such as "Hit the Quan," "Soulja Boy," and "Lip Gloss." The whole time, the audience was standing, screaming, singing, and cheering for the competitors in their grade. The winner of this game, which was announced at the end of the pep rally, was senior Kendall Jackson.
Next, the rest of the VHHS performing arts brought energy to the audience. This included performances from Freshman Cheer, Junior Varsity Cheer, the Rockettes, the Majorettes (with an astounding routine in the dark), the Rebelettes, and the color guard.
Finally, Coach Evans gave a speech about his love for the students and their school-spirit, announced the team captains for the game, and asked everyone to show up to the game to support the team.
The seniors were given the spirit stick at the end of the pep rally, but, as the event came to a close with the singing of our Alma Mater, the spirit for Homecoming week did not fade away.
