Vestavia Volleyball Update

Last Thursday Night, In a suspenseful 5-set game, the Vestavia Hills volleyball team reigned triumphant over their long lasting rivalry, the Hoover Bucs. The final score of the 5th set was 16-14, with the game winning point won by Junior Arden Warner with a block. The team now holds a record of 24 and 6. This game not only gave the team bragging rights, it gave them a better chance of winning the area championship. In order to make it to regionals, a team must be in the top two of their area. And regionals is what gets a team to the state championship. This year, Vestavia’s area consists of Tuscaloosa County, Hoover, and Thompson. The team already beat Tuscaloosa County, and have now beat Hoover, putting them in the top 2 of their area. The Rebels play Thompson this Tuesday, and if they win, they will host the area tournament that dictates who goes to regionals.

The volleyball team competed this past weekend at the Arnold Highschool Tournament in Panama City, and went 3-1, losing to the invitational tournament champion, the Cherokee High School Warriors from Canton, Georgia. The weekend before, the team won the Auburn First Serve Tournament, where they played a nail biting match against Auburn High School, and defeated them in the tie-breaker third match.

The Freshman and JV teams have also been competing and working hard. The freshman team recently beat Hoover, and has had an impressive season. The JV team started the season a little rough, but has recently been on a streak, defeating Northridge Highschool, Helena Highschool, and Tuscaloosa County.

The Vestavia Volleyball team is off to an incredible start to their season, and senior Kaylee Rickert says “The team is improving with each game we play, our mental toughness really showed in the Hoover game”. One thing that can improve is the school support, the team believes that a bigger, more engaged student section could help the team, and show the student body how incredible the sport really is! The Rebels are currently ranked #7 in the state for 7A volleyball, and If they continue the way they are playing, they have a good shot at winning the whole thing. This week, the team will play Thompson in an away game on Tuesday, and a trimatch in Fort Payne on Thursday. The next home games will be against Homewood on September 27th, and Spain Park on September 29th.
