Vestavia Singers: Capital City Classic

On Saturday, January 28th, the Vestavia Hills show choir, composed of 38 singer-dancers, a 13-member crew, and a 13-member band, boarded buses and headed down to the Montgomery Performing Arts Center for their first competition of the 2023 show choir season. After watching several performances such as a modern take on Beauty and the Beast by Hoover, a circus-themed show by Homewood’s freshmen, and a love story by Appling County whose ending rick-rolled the audience, the VH Singers headed backstage to prepare for their own performance. The singer-dancers and some band members used a warm-up room to get themselves ready for their upcoming performance, while the crew and the rest of the band set up the TV towers and double-checked the costume and show props. Finally, it was time for the singers to take the stage.

The Vestavia Hills show choir’s show this year is themed after the popular reality TV show The Bachelor. Jake Norris, starring as the bachelor in the show choir’s show, must meet several of the singer girls, including Elizabeth Moore, Mary Hogan Glenn, and Katherine de Buys, and make his decision as to whom he wants to finally give the ring. Throughout the show, the girls compete to earn Norris’s favor and to win a highly sought-after rose. The show features songs such as Feel the Love with soloist Ethan Sparks, Weird People with soloist Elizabeth Moore, Killer Instinct with soloist Katherine de Buys, Run Away with Me with soloist Jake Norris, and finally, Love Can Move Mountains with soloist Mary Hogan Glenn.

After their performance, the show choir returned to the auditorium seats to continue watching other enrapturing shows by other show choirs. The entertainment continued until 10:00pm, when the emcee stepped onstage to announce the long-awaited awards. After watching both the girls’ and boys’ solo performance champion, a hush fell over the auditorium once again as the curtains pulled away to reveal the table of trophies and the representatives onstage from each school’s show choir. The VH Singers received a third-place finish in their division, which provoked enthusiastic celebration from the members of the show choir and the audience alike. The show choir members packed up their things and began the trip back to Birmingham and arrived back at the high school shortly after midnight on the 29th. All participants of the VH Singers eagerly await the rest of the competition season and school shows to follow.
