On the night of Friday, October 21st, Vestavia Rebels won 59 to 18 over the Tuscaloosa County Wildcats, sending Rebels to the playoffs! This game marked the last home game of the season and was also Senior Night for Vestavia seniors. The pep rally that morning preceding this victorious night was one full of pride, spirit, and energy.
Each grade and the band followed their respective dress-up themes for the pep rally . The freshmen dressed in green camouflage; the sophomores wore colorful tie-dye, and the band donned shiny tinfoil. The juniors followed a theme of “time travel,” and they dressed accordingly, taking inspiration from ancient history, the 70s, the future, and more. The seniors “westerned the Wildcats,” wearing flannels, denim, and cowboy hats.
To begin, students honored Vestavia Hill High School’s 21 National Merit Semifinalists, which was the most of any high school in the state, with enthusiastic applause at the pep rally. The next highlight of the pep rally was the kickoff announcement for SGA’s annual fall canned food drive. A total goal of 20,000 cans was announced (15,000 cans for the main campus and 5,000 cans for the freshman campus), and so were prizes and incentives for bringing cans. Some of these included free Vestavia t-shirts, parking passes, entry to a raffle for a cake by band director Mr. Horton, Chick-Fil-A for the second period with the most cans, and donuts for the club with the most cans. So, bring in those cans!
Following the canned food drive kickoff, the Varsity Cheer performed impressive stunts and tricks. Then, it was time for the game of the pep rally, which was a potato sack race. Each student had to make it across the gym in a potato sack, pick up a cup of ramen, and make it back, letting the next student go. The juniors made it across and back the fastest, winning the game. The cheerleaders then led a few energizing cheers. After that, the Rockettes and Rebelettes danced together, giving a vibrant performance, while the band played wonderfully.
Then, the captains of the football team took the mic and called everyone to show up to the game that night to celebrate Senior Night. As the end of the pep rally neared, the time came for each grade and the band to try and outcheer each other for the coveted spirit stick. The freshmen ended up winning the spirit stick, and they excitedly rushed to the floor in a frenzy to claim their prize. They returned to the stands once the singing of the alma mater began and concluded another Vestavia pep rally.
The Vestavia Rebels are now playoffs-bound, and in preparation for the first round of playoffs against the Austin Black Bears, the next pep rally will be held on Friday, November 4th.
