On January 12th, the Vestavia Hills High School Math Team departed to compete in the Sickles High School Math Tournament sponsored by FAMAT, the Florida Affiliate of Mu Alpha Theta. Despite being a Southeastern regional competition, this year’s tournament was attended by thirty-four Florida-native high schools and Vestavia.
“It’s Florida against us,” quoted Algebra 2 and Precalculus coach Todd Taylor.
The Math Team competed in three separate divisions: Mu(calculus), Alpha(precalculus), and Theta(algebra 2/geometry). All members of the Math Team tested individually in their division, while 4 selected students from each division competed in a timed team round. The Math Team will revisit these three divisions in the summer during the National Mu Alpha Theta Convention, this year hosted at the University of Arkansas.
