Just recently on September 30, the Vestavia Rebels competed against the Chelsea Hornets during their Homecoming game at the Vestavia Hills High School. This game ended with a winning score of 52-10 for our football team, who held the lead most of the game, the third win for this season.
Previously, Chelsea and Vestavia Hills have never faced off against each other before. However, given Chelsea’s pre-game record of 1-4, many Rebels were confident of a victory—some even aiming for Chelsea having an ending score of 0. After the game, Vestavia now stands with a post-game record of 3-3, having only lost against some of the toughest teams in the season: Thompson, Hoover, and Mountain Brook. In fact, the Hoover Sun even mentions that the Vestavia Hills team is “trending upward” and will hopefully win several more decisive victories in this season. Throngs of students and parents flooded into the stadium dressed in red to support the team throughout the game.
The Rebels swept the game. Barely through the first quarter, junior quarterback John Paul Head had already scored a 40-yard touchdown followed by Jack Lockhart with his 9-yard touchdown run, quickly dominating the field at a score of 14-0. Robert Evans, the head coach, later reported to Vestavia Voice that “We thought we had a good plan going into tonight to up the pace and be physical, and that’s what we did.”
Unlike most games, the Vestavia Hills Marching Band, Majorettes, Color Guard, and Rockettes performed before the game instead of during Halftime in a performance known as the “Caroline Experiment.” This is because the Homecoming Court was presented along with their parents during the Halftime Show instead. The Homecoming Court is a tradition in which each class votes for their members of the homecoming court and others are nominated to raise the most money for a specific cause, who was Luke Pappalardo, the Homecoming King. This year, Vestavia has ultimately decided to rally together to raise money for cystic fibrosis, a disorder that affects breathing and digestion that can often be life threatening.
Vestavia will play against Hewitt-Trussville next week on October 7.
