February 14th, or Valentine’s Day, is a time for appreciating loved ones and feeling the comfort of love everywhere. At Vestavia Hills High School, this holiday has evolved into a season of spreading love and joy in various ways across the student body and faculty. Vestavia has become incredibly involved with Valentine-themed fundraisers, games, and events.
Earlier this month, SGA representatives might have asked you if you wanted to buy cookies to support our spring fundraiser RISE, which raises money for the UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center. Additionally, the partnership also helped support a local business, Cookie Fix. Vestavia SGA likely sold an estimated $5,000 worth of cookies. While making a real-world difference, this fundraiser also spread Valentine's spirit to students and faculty. Friends and family ordered cookies for each other, making sweet surprises on February 13th when the treats were delivered. This spirit of giving and the element of sweet treats brought the quintessential Valentine’s mood to our high school at the perfect time.
Additionally, on February 13th, Vestavia’s incredibly talented acapella choir, Just Singin, beautifully delivered “Singing Valentines” to students and faculty. They went from class to class, singing classic love songs, like Meghan Trainor's “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” and Taylor Swift’s iconic “Love Story.”
Many students had singing valentines anonymously bought for them. Just Singing would walk into the classroom and find the lucky student, forming a semi-circle around them. Then, they performed their magic, singing and harmonizing to romantic tunes. Although some students were embarrassed or feigned chagrin, this tradition brought friendly laughs and jokes the whole day. Taking a break from studying and listening to an upbeat song brought positive energy to the high school. Throughout the day, songs could be heard throughout the hallways, echoing the romantic lyrics and spreading the spirit of Valentine’s Day. This also generated money for RISE as each Singing Valentine cost $5. Once again, a fun, exciting event at Vestavia has a benefit that goes far beyond the high school itself.
This season of Valentine’s was incredibly student-involved and student-enjoyed. Students and faculty enjoyed sweet serenades and baked sweets to celebrate the time of love. Vestavia Hills High School has gone above and beyond with Valentine’s celebrations and has found ways to make a positive difference, using RISE to help those in greater need. Overall, Valentine’s at VHHS has spread love and joy in and outside the building.
