Valentine's at VHHS

For many, the third nine weeks of school can be a pretty difficult time. Every year, this quarter seems to be the period of time where students get the lowest grades, morale is low, and the weather forecast seems to be never-ending cold rain. After all, the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil just saw his shadow, which means six more weeks of winter. But, despite these somewhat unmotivating times, there is a shining light that comes right in the middle of the third nine weeks: Valentine’s Day. While this holiday may receive mixed reviews depending on everyone’s dating status, this does not just have to be a holiday for those with significant others. It is a day to celebrate all types of relationships, including those with family and friends. And, luckily for every person, VHHS offers so many great ways to celebrate this holiday and make it extra special for faculty and students alike. So, here are a few ways to make the most of this day.

Over the past few weeks, VHHS SGA has been selling bundt cakes for $5 each as a way of raising money for RISE, our semester-long philanthropic event that raises money for the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB and just kicked off last month. All the money raised goes directly to RISE, and SGA offers three different flavors customers can choose from: vanilla, chocolate, and red velvet. Buyers can choose to send the bundt cake to a student, faculty member, friend from outside of school, or even themselves! Many people do choose to buy one for themselves due to the delectable taste of the bundt cakes. Who wouldn’t want to have one for themselves?

Bundt cakes will be delivered on Valentine’s Day, so be on the lookout for a bundt cake during your second period class if you ordered one! And, even if you missed the deadline, there are usually a few extra if you wait till the end of the day, so be on the lookout for those!

The second great thing about Valentine’s Day at VHHS is another fundraiser for RISE: Valentine’s Day Surveys. Students may remember filling out a rather interesting survey a few weeks back asking questions about what animal they would be and what they would do if they saw a person shoplifting. The good news is that those questions were not for nothing! Coming up in the next few weeks, students will have the option to purchase their results outside of the lunchroom. Students will receive a piece of paper full of data on who they are compatible with to date, to be friends with, and the opposite—who they are least likely to match up with. Although not much ever comes from these results, it is definitely something fun to read about!

Last, but certainly not least, and possibly the best part of Valentine’s Day at VHHS is the Singing Valentines done by our very own acapella group: Just Singin’! All throughout the day of February 14, students will hear their beautiful voices radiating down the hall as someone gets serenaded by the group. Students can purchase a specific time slot for their friends or significant others to get serenaded outside of the lunchroom. Just Singin’ has picked out specific songs that connect with this holiday, but the school day only lasts so long so be sure to visit their table outside of the lunchroom this week and purchase one for $5!

Overall, VHHS does Valentine’s Day pretty well with many different activities available throughout the day. But, some of these options are limited, so be sure to be on the lookout for all of these activities to make sure you are maximizing your day!
