Underrated Coffee Shops for Hanging Out and Studying

Everyone knows about Panera Bread - its the go-to hang out spot. It represents a place where highschoolers can unwind, knock out some homework, and simultaneously enjoy a sufficient drink or snack. Trust me, I know. I’ve spent many hours inside those yellow-tinged walls, either cramming for a test or simply catching up with friends, and can picture those booths and brown seat cushions perfectly. But what makes Panera Bread so popular? Is it the affordability, the location, the familiarity, the decent quality of their food? Any of these factors could be the reason for Panera’s significant appeal, but for me, it’s the environment. I love that I can walk in with the intention to stay for a couple hours, trying to catch up on math homework, and not feel judged for bringing in a computer or backpack.

Something about that place is just so cozy and inviting. The problem is, I’m not the only one who thinks like this. In fact, most everyone in the school agrees with me. Now, while that might not be a problem for business, it’s definitely an issue for introverts like me who enjoy peace and solitude. So, in an effort to reclaim my sense of solace, I began looking for new areas where I could successfully study or meet up with friends. And that is ultimately what this article is about. It’s for people like me who want a place like Panera, but can’t always put up with the often busy and crowded space.

Below are three restaurants I think could serve as worthy replacements or, at the very least, alternatives to Panera Bread. The only thing I ask is that you let go of the whole familiarity aspect and keep an open mind. You never know - one of them could represent the next best hang out spot.

First up, we have O’Henry’s:

I decided to start off with this little coffee shop since it’s probably one of the more well known choices on this list. It’s located in various parts of Birmingham and is perfectly accessible for highschoolers. If you’re looking for a sparsely-populated and homey place to get work done, O’Henry’s has you covered. Depending on where you go, you’ll have the option of indoor or outdoor seating; the indoor seating consists of booths and small tables that align in a similar fashion to Panera’s. I often go to the O’Henry’s right off of Lakeshore and have always enjoyed their coffee and chai lattes. However, if you need something a little more filling, you can find a variety of breakfast and lunch options consisting of fresh, healthy ingredients. Ultimately, I would recommend this spot for its warm, comforting environment and convenient locale.

Next, we have the East 59 Cafe:

This place has become a recent favorite of mine. The first time I went, I drove to the location on 280 and was amazed by the building’s interior designing. I have always loved wood paneling, and the luxurious, red sofa is a great touch, especially with the big, block letters spelling out “Happy” mounted above it. However, I am positive that there are other, closer locations that boast awesome interior decorations as well. The point is, this coffee shop is perfect for studying and catching up with friends. If you have a long History assignment that you need to knock out, check out this spot. If you have a lot of math homework that you forgot to do, check out this spot. It never disappoints, especially not with their fair pricing. That’s actually one of my favorite things about East 59 Cafe. They’re known for their affordability, accessibility, and above all, their fun and trendy atmosphere.

Last but not least, we have Revelator Coffee:

When I tell you that this place is conducive for studying, I basically mean that it was built for. Revelator Coffee has both the modern, trendy feel of East 59 Cafe and the comforting ambiance of O’Henry’s. Combine those qualities and you’ve got one of the closest things you can get to Panera Bread, except this company has a cool logo. The service here is great, the staff is chill, and the coffee’s pretty good. I love how bright and open it is, but my favorite thing by far is how quiet and relaxing it is. I can always count on Revelator Coffee to provide me with a sanctuary where I can effectively get work done instead of wasting time trying to block out excess noise. It’s great and might be my favorite of the three, although nothing about the others is lacking.

Ultimately, Panera will always be a good place to study. Its familiarity and affordability will always be one of the main draws. However, if you ever find yourself needing some variety, or just a quieter working setting, consider this article and the restaurants I have listed. If not for the atmosphere, then maybe for the quality. There’s nothing better than getting a cup of coffee from a smaller business. Besides, they need to be supported and acknowledged too.
