Unconventional Christmas Movies to Watch

While there’s an endless selection of Christmas movies out there, sometimes it seems like there’s only a handful of good ones. Rewatching the same Christmas movies every year can grow tiring; therefore, I compiled a list of unconventional Christmas movies to break up the monotony of the holiday season.

1. Gremlins

This 1984 classic follows the story of a young man who receives a strange creature as a present from his grandfather, which then spawns other creatures who transform into mischievous little monsters that wreak havoc on a whole town on Christmas Eve. This film is a great Christmas pick for horror comedy lovers.

2. Edward Scissorhands

This Tim Burton gothic romance tells the story of an unfinished artificial humanoid who has scissor blades for hands that is taken in by a suburban family and falls in love with their daughter. The Apex and ending of the film take place during the holidays, and Edward participates in the festivities by carving ice sculptures. This movie is surprisingly warm-hearted and tells a tale of acceptance.

3. The Nightmare Before Christmas

This Tim Burton stop-motion film recounts how Jack Skellington, the King of "Halloween Town", stumbled upon "Christmas Town" and ultimately brought the two Holidays together. The best time to watch this movie is between Christmas and Halloween.

4. Die Hard

Die Hard follows New York City police detective John McClane who is caught up in a terrorist takeover of a Los Angeles skyscraper while visiting his estranged wife. Due to its Christmas Eve setting, Die Hard is generally accepted as a Christmas movie, although its status as such is disputed.

5. Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe

Based on the novel The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the film version follows four British children evacuated during the Blitz to the countryside, who find a wardrobe that leads to the fantasy world of Narnia, where they ally with the lion Aslan against the forces of the White Witch. The childlike wistfulness of the film encapsulates the Christmas spirit and the children even receive help from Father Christmas at the end of the film.

6. Krampus

If you want to watch a terribly bad Christmas horror film this holiday season, Krampus is for you. This film follows a young boy who has lost his Christmas spirit. In doing so, he unleashes the wrath of Krampus, a demonic beast in ancient European folklore who punishes naughty children at Christmas time. The boy’s family must then band together to defeat the creature.
