Earlier last week, the Vestavia Hills Outdoor Track Team hosted the King of the Mountain Invitational with separate divisions for middle schoolers and high schoolers. The King of the Mountain Invitational for middle school was held on Friday, March 10 with the varsity high school invitational the following day. Our track team volunteered to contribute the pits, shot put, start and finish line, and hospitality at both meets. Vestavia Hills invited many teams from all over Alabama including 25 teams registered in the middle school meet and 45 teams registered in the high school invitational. Spectators crowded the home stadium to watch some outstanding performances.
In the middle school division, several athletes did a remarkable job on the field. In the boys 400-meter race, Pizitz took the top three finishes. Walker McInnis ran 53.92 to place first, with Garrett Jones and Cance Mills placing second and third respectively. The future looks bright for these middle school athletes. We also saw many other athletes who will have a significant impact on the high school team in the upcoming years.
On Saturday morning, the meet started with a first-place finish from the 4x800 girls relay team. Coach Terino included that “it was a perfect day for some great performances. The meet ran smoothly, and lots of people were happy with the turnout and weather. Many facility records were broken, including in the boys 800 by our own Max Armstrong.” Max ran 1:52.53, which is a USA Top 10 mark.
The boys placed 4th overall with a multitude of podium finishes. Jack Lockhart finished second in the 300-meter hurdles. Many of the points were secured in the distance field. Max Armstrong secured a first-place finish along with his facility record in the 800. Henry Strand placed first in the 1600-meter race in a stacked field of runners. The field events also scored some big points as well. In the javelin throw, Michael Kolen placed first with a throw of over 186 feet. Jack Stubbs placed third in the long jump. These were some of the many stellar performances for the boys!
The girls placed a solid 6th place. Kaitlyn Wende placed second in the 3200, scoring big points for the girls. The 4x400-meter relay team also sprinted to a second-place finish. Riley Zeanah placed fifth in the 800 with some strong competition. In the field events, Kennedy Moreland scored big points for the girls with a height of 11 feet in the pole vault. Layne Turner placed fifth in the discus throw as well. Overall, the King of the Mountain Invitational was a great success for Vestavia. The Rebels are building up momentum quickly this season.
