The University of Alabama Speech and Debate Tournament

The University of Alabama Hall of Fame debate tournament took place on January 19-20, 2024. The Vestavia speech and debate team won first in sweepstakes by 3 points! Schools from all over Alabama, and even from other states like Mississippi, Florida, and Tennessee attended, braving the cold and bringing on the competition.

The Speech team scored some amazing wins, with Carol Li placing 1st in impromptu, Tina Lou placing 1st in After Dinner Speaking, Ellie Hoar placing 4th in Impromptu, Fatima Malik placing 4th in Program Oral Interpretation and 5th in Poetry Interpretation, Reva Lingala placing 5th in impromptu and After Dinner Speaking, Vivian Lin placing 5th in Informative, and Anna Kate Bailey and Ethan Schmidt placing 6th in Duo Interpretation. These events involve strong speaking, creative presentations, and persuasive interpretations.

The Debate Team also secured points, with many breaking into the elimination rounds.

In Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Justin Zou and Jake Robinson broke into the Semifinals, placing 3rd and 4th respectively. The topic was “The United States ought to substantially reduce its military presence in the West Asia-North Africa region.”

In Public Forum, Tina Gao and Grace Ding, and Anvitha Yaparla and Vivian Shi qualified for quarterfinals. Captains Archana Rajasekeran and Reena Ramani, and Rohan Parekh and Monsi Parekh qualified for semifinals. The topic was “Resolved: The United States federal government should repeal Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.”

Aside from the rounds, the team made memories trekking through campus in freezing weather, trying new events for the first time, spending time together in their hotel rooms, and having a great dinner at Five Guys. It took a team effort to secure this win. Congratulations!
