The Origins of Black History Month

What started the recognition of February as Black History Month? I’m here today to answer that question.

In February of 1986, Congress passed a public law which designated February to be “National Black History Month.” It was created mainly to focus on the contributions of all African Americans to the United States. It honors all Black people from all time periods. It's an opportunity to recognize and spotlight the achievements African Americans have accomplished in America. It honors the triumphs and struggles of African Americans throughout history. Since being recognized by Congress, other countries have joined as well, such as Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and recently, Germany.

But who created Black History Month? That would be Carter G. Woodson. Carter was a scholar who dedicated his life to celebrating the historical contributions of Black people. He first began by establishing the first Black History Week back in 1926. His concept was later expanded into what is now known as Black History Month. How do we support/celebrate Black History Month? Well, one way is to support local black owned businesses. Here are some located in Birmingham: Meme’s Coffee and Deli, Yo Mamas, K&J Elegant Pastries, Fat Charles BBQ, Bridge + Root, and so many more.

Hopefully after reading this article, you'll understand the beginnings of something that is so important to our nation!
