The Library in the Forest: Activities for Teens

One of the basic components of a city is a library, and the Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest does not fall short. While libraries are most commonly known for checking out books, our town’s library has so much more to offer, such as a quiet study place, community events, and even hiking trails. Located right off Highway 31, it proves a convenient location as it is only 6 minutes from VHHS and 3 minutes from the Vestavia Hills City Center if driving.

The library has many upcoming events for high school students to participate in. What better way to celebrate the Halloween season than by a pumpkin painting party? Come join the library as they transform pumpkins into spooky decorations. Every Friday, the library hosts a gaming event for teenagers to join one another in playing video games. Additionally, a creative writing group is hosted frequently, with their closest meeting quickly approaching on November 2. But doesn’t that just sound like more school? Daniel Tackett, Teen Services Librarian, expresses that “it’s not like an English class” and that they participate in fun, simple, and enjoyable writing activities. Additionally, come play chess on November 3, regardless of your skill level. According to the library’s website, you can play with other peers including a “decorated chess champion” who can teach you how to play or compete with you. These are only a few of the fun opportunities our library offers. Make sure to check out the teen department at vestavialibrary.org.

Are you involved in countless activities in need of service hours? The library greatly appreciates any volunteers they can receive. Tackett informs that these volunteers sort and shelve books and look for any items/books that are missing. He shares, “I always look forward to having more volunteers.” He says that many people come help over the summer. Some students even came over our school’s recent fall break and got over 6 service hours each!

Are you interested in reading but don’t know where to start? Tackett advises that the books each individual student might like depends on the preferences of the person themselves. The librarians often try to help out by asking about the students’ favorite movies. For example, Tackett observes that many teenagers like the movie To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, so he oftens recommends the book by Jenny Han since the movie was derived from the book. Another example would be that if a student likes Marvel or superhero movies, they might be drawn to graphic novels and comics. The Library in the Forest has a diverse collection of fiction and nonfiction books, so there is bound to be a book you can’t wait to dive into!

The Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest hopes to see you soon!
