The Iconic Vestavia Hills Homecoming Dance

By Elin Mason and Mena Monroe

One of the first elevated events of the fall season, the Homecoming dance is an opportunity of fun for all grades. The Homecoming season commences with a week full of fun themes and is followed by the iconic home football game. The seniors, dressed as Hollywood figures, won the Homecoming pep rally that was arguably one of the best pep rallies of the season. There were several performances from a multitude of groups, such as the Rockettes and Rebelettes. Following the dance battle and Majorette performance (which featured light up batons), Luke Pappalardo was announced Homecoming King for raising the most money for Vestavia’s fall charity the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The Rebels took on Chelsea and beat them 52-10, as the crowd cheered them on. Every student was decked out in red gear to support the Rebels. During halftime, school-voted Homecoming Queen Kaylee Rickert, received her crown.

The Homecoming dance took place on October 1st in the old gym at the highschool. At 7 p.m., the dance commenced and it wrapped up around 9:30 p.m. The students got to greet some of their favorite teachers, like Mr. Mann and Coach Morgan. Students from all grades could be seen taking photos with friends and dancing to some of their favorite songs, like “Party in the U.S.A.” by Miley Cyrus. There were colorful lights, a Bruster’s food truck, and memories being made. Additionally to being a great dance, this event helped raise money for the One Birmingham Service Club. Rebecca Berry, President Emeritus, states, “We use the funds that we raised to pour back into our community and share the Gospel through serving others. It’s also a great way to build a sense of community within the school by bringing everyone together in one place.”

The Homecoming Dance is most often known for its pictures. Before the dance, students took photos in aesthetic locations such as the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, the Vestavia Country Club, and the Birmingham Club. After taking pictures, most groups went to restaurants or a friends’ house to eat dinner together. Following dinner, groups arrived at the dance to party alongside their peers. Finally, students resorted to their afterparties. A majority of the students went to a friends’ house. Some after parties included bonfires, swimming, and costume parties.

What is a dance without fashionable attire? Most guys wore a blue suit decked with a boutonniere and a colorful tie. Some guys even wore a snazzy plaid jacket! Furthermore, girls also tended to dress in formal attire. A majority of girls curled their hair and wore dangly earrings. A popular dress style this year included sequins and sparkly dresses. On the other hand, many girls chose the classic black dress look. Even though they wore a simplistic dress, girls dressed it up by adding colorful heels and elaborate earrings. Continuing a trend from the 2021 Homecoming Dance, several girls wore dresses with a sash or a cutout. Overall, Vestavia Hills did not disappoint in fashion!
