The Favorite Lunches of VHHS Students and Staff

**The media below contains the opinion of an individual student and therefore does not represent or speak to the values of Vestavia Hills High School and Vestavia Hills City Schools**

Few things are as satisfying as a delicious and filling meal, well-earned after making it halfway through a long day of assignments, examinations, and other assorted academic pursuits; just ask a high school student. For many of the high-achievers and go-getters at Vestavia Hills High School, the lunchroom provides a period of relaxation and reprieve from the busyness of day-to-day academic life. Lunch periods are essential, providing students with hearty and nutritious meals and a chance to relax and socialize with fellow students. Whether you are selecting a light snack from the grab-and-go or loading up a plate with way too many wings, there is truly something for everybody in the school’s cafeteria. This article will seek to highlight some of the favorite lunches of VHHS’s students and staff.

While certain lunches were name-dropped more than others, it is important to note that there was no clear consensus on a favorite lunch among the students and staff interviewed. The mixed results truly speak not only to the variety of foods provided by the lunch staff, but also goes to show the consistently high quality of such foods.

However, one lunch stood out above all others, having been named more than any other meal by those interviewed: crispitos and tortilla chips (with queso and salsa, of course) were selected as a favorite lunch by several students. Senior student Madilyn Whitener explained her love for crispitos, stating “they have the best flavor and filling. Scrumptious!” Among others, fellow seniors Wright Bishop and Henry Jackson concurred that crispitos were the best lunchroom meal; both students declined to state a reason for their preference (though Mr. Bishop described the meal as simply “yumstown”). It seems that the appeal of crispitos truly speaks for itself: there is no one reason for why the meal is so good, it just is

But other than the majority of students who chose crispitos, responses to the prompt of a favorite lunch were wide and varied. Some answers, such as the much-anticipated “Wing Day”, were to be expected; senior Youssef El Shayeb selected wings as his favorite meal, highlighting in particular the wide variety of flavors and the potent pairing of the wings with the cafeteria’s Boom Boom Sauce. But some students preferred the grab-and-go meals over the cafeteria’s original meals, such as senior Jareth Klootwijk, who highlighted the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as a favorite. Other responses included chicken sandwiches, mac and cheese, pizza crunchers, and even the semi-rare butter chicken (which senior Tashfin Abdullah described as “creamy and spicy”). Faculty were also consulted about their favorite lunchroom meals; Magistra Quarterman, VHHS’s resident Latin expert, chose the southern-inspired dish of chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, and cornbread as her favorite meal the cafeteria provides, noting it as one she looks forward to. As for the cafeteria staff themselves, there were several answers, including the mac and cheese, breakfast, jambalaya, and the pasta bake. When asked what dish she was most proud of, Mrs. Wanda chose beef tips on white rice.

While the number of meals that the cafeteria provides its students with is varied in kind, two things remain consistent in every dish: the high quality of the food, and the care and effort that the cafeteria staff puts in to ensure that everyone at VHHS has a great meal. So the next you’re in the lunchroom, be sure to thank the cafeteria for the incredible work they do, because they truly have an incredible impact on our school.
