The 2023 AMC Math Contests

The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC), the most prestigious math contest in the nation, provided a platform for the acclaimed VHHS math team to exhibit their abilities. The AMC10 was for 10th graders and below while the AMC12 was for 12th graders and below. In addition, each test had 2 versions, the A and the B, to give multiple chances. The A was held on November 8th and the B was held on November 14th.

Each test has the same format-25 multiple-choice problems in 75 minutes, with a 1.5 penalty for guessing-that demands speed and accuracy. The problems covered a vast spectrum of concepts from algebraic equations to geometric probability. They not only demanded mathematical knowledge, but also the ability to invent innovative solutions to new, unconventional problems.

Recognition

The top scorers in the AMC 10 and AMC 12 categories will advance to the AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination), a prestigious next step in the mathematical ladder. Around 5% of test takers make it to the AIME. In contrast, the AIME is a 3 hour, 15 problem, test with extremely challenging problems.

The AMCs open up doors to even more prestigious programs, such as the USA Math Olympiad (a proof contest), Math Olympiad Program (what decides the International Math Olympiad team), and more. Prestigious math camps require AMC scores as a crucial part of the application. Even colleges such as MIT and Caltech ask for AMC scores!

Behind every success story stands the dedication of educators who nurture a love for mathematics. Mr. Taylor and Mr. Hyde, the sponsors of the VHHS math team, have done an excellent job preparing the math team for the AMCs. Every year, many students qualify for the AIME.

Rising from the Challenges

This year’s AMCs have been especially eventful because the problems were leaked 4 days before the A test! The problems appeared on forums and private chats. The math team remained honest, solved the problems to the best of their abilities, and were satisfied with the overall scores. The Mathematical Association of America is currently taking measures to detect cheaters.

The 2023 AMCs have proven, once again, that mathematics is not just a subject; it is a journey of discovery and the joy of conquering challenges.
