Thanksgiving With The Rebels

**All media below is the opinion of an individual student and therefore does not represent or speak to the values of Vestavia Hills High School and Vestavia Hills City Schools**

As the last week of school approaches before Thanksgiving break, many students are looking forward to the time away from school to relax, spend time with loved ones, and to reflect on all they are grateful for in their lives. However, there is another thing many students are anticipating for Thanksgiving Break: the food. Thanksgiving break is one of the best times of the year for good food that some students only get once a year. So, here are some of the most highly anticipated Thanksgiving dishes for Vestavia Hills High School students this year:

A usual fan favorite for many students is rolls. Emma Campbell, a senior, said it was a difficult decision to choose which one meal was her favorite, but ultimately chose rolls. Senior Clara Williams is also a passionate supporter of rolls at her Thanksgiving meal.

Another very popular dish is mashed potatoes. Ryan Yancey, Claire Morris, and Katie Culbertson love these at their Thanksgiving meal. To add, Danielle Chbeir claims she loves anything with corn or potatoes in it at her Thanksgiving meal.

One meal students might only have during Thanksgiving, but is equally popular, is dressing. Several seniors claimed that their favorite part of the meal is stuffing, but there seems to be a large debate over whether it is stuffing or dressing. At your Thanksgiving table this year, be sure to ask yourself, am I eating dressing or stuffing?

One dish that adds color to your Thanksgiving plate is green beans. Senior Laura Matthews claims these are her favorites. Another colorful staple is the cranberries, which Lotte Wambsganss claims are her favorites.

With so many options on the table, it is difficult to pick a favorite meal for some students. This is the case for senior Caroline Collums who says her favorite dishes are both green bean bundles and hash brown casserole which are both equally delicious. Who could blame her for not being able to choose?

Even if you’re not a big vegetable person, one dish almost everyone can get behind is bacon wrapped green beans. Campbell Johnston, a senior, claims these are her favorites at Thanksgiving.

For some students, Thanksgiving is bittersweet as they cannot experience the full extent of the good food offered. While things such as food allergies might deter some students from the many benefits of Thanksgiving food, senior Caroline Hawkins is excited for her family’s Thanksgiving meal despite her gluten allergy, stating that “they usually switch up their meal each year” and her favorite part of the many meals they have shared over the years is the “brisket.”

Another important part of the Thanksgiving meal is the casseroles. Caroline Randall claims that hash brown casserole is her favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal. Will Sasser and Mary Katherine Meeks enjoy a good sweet potato casserole.

What appears to be the most popular dish at Thanksgiving meals is mac and cheese. Campbell Brown, Camden Preskitt, Hayes Huntley, Macy Stoffregen, Mary Hogan Glenn, and Barrett Harper

If you know senior Freddie Nelson, then it is no surprise to you that his favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal is ham. Similarly, Will Mitchell loves honey ham.

Of course, dessert cannot be forgotten when it comes to students' favorite Thanksgiving meals. Lynley Threadcraft and Virginia Eickholt’s favorite part of the meal is the pie. Similarly, Avery Huntley loves pecan pie. Another popular dessert is cranberry jello, which Joe Eshleman claims is his favorite dish.

Sadly, it seems that no one selected turkey as their favorite part of their Thanksgiving meal. While this is the first dish many of us think of, it does not appear to be one that is very popular. No matter how your family celebrates Thanksgiving, be sure to enjoy the time off of school, be grateful for your family, and indulge in some delicious food over the break.
