As the summertime heat dwindles and the cool winter breeze fills the air, it’s fun to look back on the summer. What better way to do that than through food? I recently conducted a survey to find out what our classmates at Vestavia crave during the warmer months. With over 25 responses, it’s easy to see that these snacks aren’t just cherished for their taste - they each carry personal experiences and connections with them.
Without a doubt, fruits topped the list with watermelon being the most popular summertime snack and various forms of ice cream coming in a close second. Many students answered with unique, memorable snacks with compelling reasoning as well. Here’s what some students love about various fruits:
Senior Ellie Robicheaux said her favorite snack to eat during the summer is cucumber salad. She said it’s “refreshing” and allows her “valuable time to herself.”
Junior Vivian Shi stated that her favorite snack last summer was a Caprese salad. She loves how it’s “customizable” so she can add whatever toppings she wants. She also said the heirloom tomatoes she puts in her salad are only available during the summer.
On a similar note, senior Ethan Schmidt said his favorite snacks were watermelon, cucumber, and feta salad because it reminds him of when he was young.
A handful of students voted their favorite ice cream flavor as their favorite summertime snack as well:
Connor Moorhouse - Peach
Lily Xie - Pineapple Fruit Bar
Mariam Malik - Ice Cream Sandwich
Beyond the popular fruits and ice creams, some students surprised me with their bizarre choices:
Junior Rett Kline said “summer is already fire, but the fire doesn’t burn quite as bright without Funyuns!”
On a similar note, Justin Zou said spicy ramen was his favorite on cool summer nights.
Dev Patel said he likes Bomb Pops because of the way their grooves feel on his tongue.
This survey showcases the vibrant array of summertime snacks enjoyed by Vestavia students, each with its own unique story. Whether it’s the refreshment of cucumber salad, the sweet taste of peach flavored ice cream, or the spicy kick of Hot Funyuns, it’s clear that summer snacks reflect joy and diversity - traits of being a student at Vestavia.
