With summer just around the corner, many VHHS students may be looking for a way to make money and stay busy over the summer. Summer jobs can also provide you with valuable life skills and will look good on a college application. Personally, I’ve loved having a summer job so I created a list of jobs that VHHS students could possibly have this summer.
Lifeguarding: Ages 15 and up could be a lifeguard this summer. After getting certified, you could work at the Wald Park pool, the Vestavia Country Club pool, or the YMCA. You also could teach swimming lessons.
Work at Andy’s Creekside Nursery: Apply to work at Andy’s and spend your summer taking care of plants. You could also work across the street at Andy’s Farmers Market.
Become a camp counselor: Before applying to become a camp counselor, you’ll most likely have to become certified in CPR, but then you could apply to become a counselor at summer camps such as Camp McDowell.
Work in retail: work as a salesperson at retail stores at the Summit or around Vestavia. There are tons of small boutiques or large-scale retail stores you could work at this summer.
Work the Extended Day Program at the elementary schools: Work EDP at any of Vestavia’s elementary schools. You’ll be working with kids for a starting pay of $10.40 an hour. You must be 16 or older and the application is on the board website.
Work concessions: Work the concession stand at the Wald Park pool or baseball fields. You’ll be able to watch games and get tips at the same time.
Referee: If you have experience in a sport, you could referee. Referee youth league games in sports such as basketball, football, or soccer.
Babysit: See if any of your neighbors need a babysitter this summer. You could also sign up for babysitting sites that match you with potential babysitting jobs near you.
Dog Walking/Sitting: If kids aren’t your thing, you could dogsit or walk any of your neighbor's dogs.
Online tutor: Sign up for an online tutoring service and make money without having to leave your house.
Summer jobs are supposed to be fun, so don’t stress out over them! There are tons of summer jobs available around Vestavia. Finally, I hope you found this article helpful.
