Student Highlight: Freddie Nelson

Vestavia Hills senior Fred “Freddie” Nelson has dedicated his four years at Vestavia to serving the community. Freddie has made his mark at Vestavia, from being the vice president of his junior class to serving as the current vice president of the high school’s Student Government Association. He is also heavily involved in Youth Leadership and is a part of Help the Hills and National Honor Society.

Freddie describes his experience in SGA. “My favorite parts about being in SGA are the community and friendships I’ve gained because of it, the impact we get to have on the school, and all the fun and memorable opportunities we get to do. This year as Vice President, I’ve really enjoyed being involved with our fall charity, The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and I’m looking forward to the Canned Food Drive coming up,” while also reminding students: “stay tuned for its kick-off and get ready to bring your cans!”

However, Freddie Nelson is more than his executive positions and kind demeanor. Freddie has his own quirks and hobbies.

To some of his classmates, he may be known as that kid who will eat a full lunch in class. Freddie himself has said, “I eat about 3 lunches a day, starting in 2nd period.” Supporting his love of food, Freddie is a regular patron at Taco Bell. “I SWEAR by the $2 Chipotle Ranch Grilled Chicken Burrito. It is the best thing ever. So cheap, so good, so filling. However, if I am extra hungry, I will additionally order the Spicy Potato Soft Taco, which is only $1. Y’all need to get it. You’ll not get a $3 lunch that is good and filling anywhere else.”

Not only is he active in school, he is also active in fitness, being a regular at his gym and going on long runs. Even after a full night of dancing at homecoming, Freddie ran a half marathon! Staying true to himself, he is skilled in writing upside down, a skill he picked up freshman year, and will solely use folders.

His creativity goes beyond writing poetry. If you have checked the Instagram page @vhhsclassof2023, you may have noticed the humorous well-edited posts that encourage seniors to dress up for pep rallies. Those posts are made by our very own Freddie Nelson. Nelson takes pride in his “masterpieces”. He considers the Electrify The Eagles theme (pictured below) as his favorite because of all the chaos showed in the post.

Recollecting his past years at Vestavia, Freddie says, “I have so many great memories here at Vestavia. One of my favorites would definitely be homecoming last year. I loved the dance being at Wald Park and was able to just have a good time, dance, and meet new people that I’m so grateful are some of my closest friends today! Some runner-ups are Rise Day, Rebel Runs, Prom, escorting Mrs. Rozell on homecoming, and announcing Powder Puff!”

As this is his last year at Vestavia, he will miss “the community and atmosphere the most. I’ve spent my whole high school career building the person I am today and establishing all of the friendships and relationships I have with my peers and teachers that I will greatly miss after high school.”

As for future plans, Freddie plans on attending The University of Alabama to pursue nursing and possibly minor in creative media. We wish Freddie nothing but the best in college and his future endeavors. Roll Tide!
