Rebels Cross Country Finishes off a Strong Season

Vestavia Hills Cross Country is wrapping up a strong season with state championships just around the corner. The team raced in eight meets this season, including an overnight trip in Georgia. This year’s team is under a new head coach: Coach Anderson. Assistant Coach Terino states that “Coach Anderson is a fantastic motivator and makes cross country an awesome environment for the kids.”

Under the wing of a new head coach, new goals were set in place as early as the summer. Coach Anderson and Coach Terino both agree that the “biggest goal we have this year is to make sure we are always intentional with what we are doing. Every step matters. Every stretch. Every drill. Every stride. It all pays dividends to how we compete on November 5, and how we will compete in track.”

Cross country is unique because it’s an individual and team sport. Countless memories and friendships are made through difficult workouts and long miles.

Boys and girls JV teams competed in JV championships on October 24. The boys and girls teams placed second and third, respectively. Max Armstrong won the boys race followed by six other teammates in the top twenty-five: David Howard (6th), Alex Cassimus (8th), Mason Thompson (9th), Davis Witt (16th), Owen Seal (20th), and Brennan Promer (25th). Maddie Hazelton led the girls with a seventh-place finish. Kelsey Redden (18th) and Finley Becker (20th) also placed in the top twenty-five. Both teams had a wonderful season and are looking forward to track season.

Coach Terino says that JV championships are a “nice way to see what the future of our program looks like in a championship setting.”

On October 27, the varsity boys and girls teams raced at sectionals. Every year, sectionals is held at Veterans Park in Hoover. The top four teams in each race qualify for state. The boys were 7A Section 3 champions with Will Jordan placing second and Alex Leath placing third. The girls were 7A Section 3 runner-up. Claire Spooner led the girls with a second-place finish. The varsity teams are excited to finish the season strong at state.

Come out to Oakville Indian Mounds on November 5 to cheer on the Rebels as they finish out their championship season at the AHSAA State Championships. Go Rebels!
