On Wednesday, October 16, Vestavia’s Powderpuff teams competed to win the championship for their classes.
The senior-freshman game, the first of the night, began at 7:00 p.m. The seniors started with a kickoff to the 30-yard line while the first-ever Powderpuff pep squad cheered them on from the sidelines. Next, it was the freshmen’s turn to punt, and they returned the ball to the seniors’ 28-yard line. In response, senior quarterback Betsy Whitson completed a Hail Mary throw for about 60 yards. Later, with around three minutes left in the first half, the ball was intercepted by the freshmen, denying the seniors a chance to score. Kicking off the second half, the seniors returned the ball to the freshmen’s 40-yard line; they completed a passing touchdown to Addison Mizerany, who also kicked the extra point. The freshmen turned over on downs but immediately intercepted the ball at their own 20; still, it was too late; the second half ended at a final score of 7-0 favoring the seniors.
In between games, the pep squad, wearing white T-shirts with cut-off sleeves performed to “Thunderstruck” by ACDC and “Fein” by Travis Scott. Highlights from their performance included waving blue shakers as they “griddied,” “flossed,” and made a kick line on the field.
Next, the juniors took on the sophomores. Early in the game, junior quarterback Molly Mac Sharp ran for a gain of 20 yards. The juniors attempted to score on their 4th down but came up short. With 2:30 remaining in the first half, Sharp made a Pick 6, but the juniors missed the extra point. Sophomore Callie Davis made a big touchdown run, but the seniors blocked their 2-point attempt. Tied at 6-6, the sophomores and juniors played in overtime until the juniors shut down a sophomore touchdown attempt and scored their own points to end the game.
Finally, the seniors played the juniors in the championship game. During the first half, junior Reese Adams denied the seniors a touchdown with an interception in the endzone. After some long runs by seniors Betsy Whitson and Addison Mizerany, the juniors caught another interception, this time by Molly Mac Sharp with only 5 minutes left in the first half. The seniors got the ball back, ran for a touchdown, and made the extra point. The seniors later intercepted again for a touchdown and made the extra point with 1:30 left in the game. The game ended with a final score of 14-0, leaving the senior class champions of the 2024 Powderpuff games.
Thanks to all who attended the Powderpuff games on the 16th, and be sure to congratulate the winners if you see them in the halls!
