Popular Styles at 2023 Prom

This year, Vestavia’s prom had a wide range of styles when it came to outfits, hair, and flowers.

One of the biggest styles for dresses this year was definitely retro, 70s looks. The light and breathable materials made for perfect dancing dresses, but did not disappoint in pictures either as their bright colors, patterns, ruffles, and layers added unique touches to each dress.

But, this style did not drown out the rest. Classic dresses of primary tones were prominent. Blue and white shades dominated the crowds. These traditional colors were seen paired with fun details such as beading, sequins, glitter, and feathers. Some common yet untraditional additions, however, were cut outs around the waist. The cut outs added a unique flare to dresses while also allowing for more comfort when it came to moving around.

The shapes of the dresses were diverse as well. Dresses with A-line, mermaid, ballgown, and body-con skirts perfectly complemented body frames of all types. The necklines of dresses ranged from haltered, to square, to straight, to v-lined, to sweethearts. And while some backs of dresses were quite standard, many people chose dresses with open backs and cinched fabric to keep their dress eye-catching from all angles.

Besides dresses, the tuxedo realm stayed consistent with classic black suits and bowties ruling the field. Here and there, there were white and colored tuxes as well, adding a nice complement to the dresses.

When it came to hair, there were not many people who broke away from classic styles. Many girls kept their hair down and quite natural with curls, waves, or straightening. People who had their hair up mainly opted for a low bun, but some high ponytails also made an appearance. There were also a few fun pops of color with dyed hair!

Many dresses were paired with nosegay flower bouquets. Most bouquets consisted of white flowers with fun accent colors, but some were a solid color. These were paired with matching boutonnieres.

The only level that was found to be quite standard across the board was shoes. Even though many people removed or changed their shoes for the dance floor, pictures consisted of classic heels and dress shoes. But, some people did wear name brand sneakers.

The diversity of styles can be perfectly summed up with one simple quote from senior Mena Monroe.

“More people were stepping into what they wanted to wear versus what people wanted them to wear.”

This year, Vestavia students broke away from peer pressure and conformity to a specific style in order to embrace all personalities at the school. Though the styles differed, all were perfectly fit to their student and brought out the best in them and the people around them.
