Every time we start a new year, many people like to set a goal for themselves or try something new. This has been a tradition since the late 1800s, and now more than ⅓ of Americans make new year's resolutions. Even though so many Americans make resolutions, about 80% fail by February. Below, I have some suggestions for ideas and resolutions for the new year that are easy to accomplish and fun!
There are many boring new year’s resolutions such as losing weight, quitting social media, etc. Instead, try brightening yours and other people’s days by giving one compliment a day. Giving compliments is statistically proven to not only improve the other person’s happiness, but yours as well! Giving compliments improves your overall well-being, and if done once a day, can make a positive impact on your life. Compliments also improve overall self-esteem, which is especially important now as self-esteem is very low in the US.
New year’s resolutions don’t always have to be physical goals. Sometimes, they can just be little hobbies. A great way to keep track of your year and get to know yourself is to journal and/or create a memory jar! In a journal you can write about your day, how you felt during your day, and what you loved about your day. Journaling is proven to prioritize problems and concerns which lead to lower levels of stress. Once you finish your journal at the end of the year, you can read through it and reflect on your overall year. Journaling is a great way to get to know yourself and improve your mental health. If journaling is too time consuming, or not enjoyable, you can start a memory jar! Memory jars are jars with paper slips dated with one memory from each day. Creating a memory jar is just a fun thing to do so that at the end of the year, you can open your jar and grab a memory from any day. These can also be done with friends and family so that at the end of the year you can all get together, open your jars, and read some of your favorite memories.
Sometimes new year’s resolutions can seem a little bland or boring, but resolutions can be fun and beneficial even if it’s something as simple as compliments or journaling. I hope that many of you feel inspired to start something new for the new year and consider any of the resolutions above!
