Peer Tutoring is a Vestavia Hills High School organization that promotes students helping their fellow classmates.
It focuses on positive reinforcement and connections between students to foster a healthy learning environment. For many students who struggle to understand what their teachers are saying, peer tutoring proves to be more effective as they are learning from someone who is on the same level as they are.
Three teachers sponsor peer tutoring. During third period: Ms. Busbee, fourth period: Coach Cameron, and fifth period: Ms. Townsen. Each has a half period where the peer tutors (that are chosen the previous summer), can teach their assigned student whatever they need help with.
Third-period peer tutoring president, Reva Lingala, has been a tutor for two years, and says that she enjoys “the feeling of knowing that you are helping someone out, and seeing them do well after putting in the effort.”
Another tutor highlights, “It is a really great opportunity to help my friends, and it helps me learn too!”
Some anonymous students who have received tutoring believe that it really works!
One reported, “It’s fun and it helps!”
Another detailed, “It definitely helps!”
And a final student praised, “It’s great that our school offers it.”
Peer tutoring provides a real chance for students to make an impact on their community by helping their friends and classmates in a more organized setting. It also provides a chance for students to take charge of their learning by signing themselves up for peer tutoring, demonstrating the commitment and tenacity displayed by Vestavia Hills High School students.
Students have continued to participate in peer tutoring for several years at Vestavia Hills High School and will continue to do so in the future. Students can ask their counselors or teachers for more information on tutoring and can fill out a form to sign up. Most tutoring sessions occur only twice a week and last for about thirty minutes, typically during the student’s study period paired with lunch.
If you or anyone you know is interested in becoming a peer tutor or getting tutored, talk to your grade-level counselor now! Students can get recommendations from teachers and can receive help communicating with their teachers from their tutors. Help is available in all subjects ranging from core classes, foreign language, and electives to simply getting help with organization or study skills!
Peer tutoring is a great organization that this school is proud of. Anyone with any interest should find out more about this unique opportunity.
