Peer Tutoring Opportunities at the High School

Do you need some extra help in a hard class you are taking? Lucky for you, the high school’s main campus offers a couple free peer tutoring opportunities to get help from students who recently took or are taking the class. These peer tutors offer direct tutoring, studying advice, and tips and tricks for specific teachers’ classes.

One opportunity is peer tutoring during your study period. Depending on your schedule, you can get help during 4A, 4B, 5A, or 5B. Peer tutors are available during these times to help in all subjects. Sometimes, peer tutors can also be available during other periods of the day based on their schedule. If this sounds like a beneficial tutoring opportunity for you, you can talk to Mrs. Townson in room A240 or Coach Cameron in room E143. You can also email them at townsonms@vhcs.us and cameronml@vhcs.us.

Another peer tutoring option after school is Homework Helpers with tutoring from National Honor Society students. This opportunity is from 4 pm to 6pm, Monday through Thursday, in room C112, and offers tutoring by both students and teachers in the four core curriculum classes. Each specific day of the week is focused for tutoring in a specific subject and has set teachers available.

Mondays are focused on English tutoring and alternates between Ms. Bedgood and Ms. Graphos as teacher tutors.

Tuesdays are focused on math tutoring and have Mr. Mundt as a teacher tutor.

Wednesdays are focused on history and have Coach Morgan as a teacher tutor.

Thursdays are focused on science and alternates between Ms. Busbee and Ms. Dew as teacher tutors.

For more information about Homework Helpers, you can talk or email Ms. Vernon at vernonl@vhcs.us, a school counselor, or any of the teachers listed above.

If you have a busy schedule that conflicts with either Peer Tutoring or Homework Helpers, there are still other ways to get help in a subject.

For example, teachers have specific free periods throughout the day that can be used for extra help. You can ask a teacher during class if they would be available to help during that period, or maybe even before or after school. Many people also form study groups and go to places like the library and Panera to help each other in a subject. Lastly, lunch is a beneficial time to multitask and get some last minute help from a lunchmate for an upcoming test or quiz.

The high school offers many peer tutoring opportunities that are focused towards your success. So, try peer tutoring and raise your learning and your grades!
