This year, 23 Vestavia Hills High School students were named National Merit Semifinalists. The students and staff at Vestavia Hills High School would like to congratulate Tashfin Abdullah, Jack Cobb, Madeline Crawford, Ali Fathallah-Shaykh, Kendall Feild, Ishaan Garg, Logan Gregory, Levi Griem, Logan Hawley, Chase Kaiser, Cuewon Kim, Terence Li, Timothy Li, Parker Liu, Ethan Melenevsky, John Pickett, Andrew Sheng, Ishaan Singh, Nicholas Snow, Caroline Tyndall, Mengzhen Wang, Allison Xie, and Bryan Zhang.
The National Merit Scholarship Program recognizes high-achieving students. The competition is determined through scores on the PSAT. Students qualify by scoring within the 99th percentile. More than 1.3 million students took the PSAT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) from over 21,000 schools. This year 23 Vestavia students were named National Merit Semifinalists, scoring within the top 1% in the nation. These students are among 268 named National Merit semifinalists in Alabama.
To become a finalist and to receive the scholarship, the semifinalists will submit a scholarship application including their academic record, extracurricular activities, and awards received. The results will be announced in the spring of 2025. Of the 50,000 semifinalists, around 15,000 students are expected to advance to the finalist stage. Of the 15,000 students, about 6,870 students will receive the scholarship.
The scholarship winners are chosen based on accomplishments, skills, and potential. As such, students must be recommended and earn a stellar SAT/ACT score.
Vestavia Hills High School Principal Blair Inabinet states that the students embody the school’s core values of respect, excellence and service:“These stellar students have respected the values of their education, pursued excellence in their studies and served as role models to their peers. This achievement celebrates their dedication and represents a milestone on their journey to continued success.”
Once again, congratulations to the named semifinalists! Vestavia’s students and staff can’t wait to see what these students continue to do.
In addition, good luck to all the Vestavia juniors taking the upcoming PSAT on October 23rd. Semifinalists have recommended using Bluebook and Khan Academy to familiarize yourself with the PSAT format.
