Love Your Neighbor Concert

One of our goals at Vestavia Hills is to give back to our community, and as a part of that, the One Birmingham Club hosted its annual Love Your Neighbor Concert to raise money for our charities. We celebrated each day of the week by focusing our attention on an important part of the community. Monday was Love Your Teacher Day where we celebrated the excellence of our faculty and staff. Tuesday was Love Your Neighbor Day, a time to think about those closest to us. Wednesday was Love Your Earth Day, and Thursday was Love Your Community Day. The week was concluded by a very successful concert where The Sunburn performed hit 90s and 2000s songs like “I’m Just A Girl.”

Wright Bishop, the president of 1Bham, was forced to tackle a massive challenge just days ahead of the concert: the rain. The concert, originally scheduled to be at the big field at Wald Park, was moved into the practice gym of Vestavia Hills High School. Regardless, many of the students’ favorite parts of the event could still be seen. LED lights decorated the walls and colored lights shone down on the band as students danced to the music and explored everything there was to offer. Members of 1Bham sold drinks, pizza, t-shirts, and glow sticks.

A few attendees remarked that their favorite part of the event was the annual cornhole single-elimination tournament. Pairs could sign up for just a dollar to play in the tournament. Ms. Hester, one of the sponsors of the club, played alongside a fellow teacher. The competition was fierce, as another pair of teachers handily beat most of the students in the tournament. Attendees could also play football and spike ball.

Best of all, it was a comforting environment full of students, teachers, and supportive parents all mingling together and enjoying spending time together, and this is truly what Love Your Neighbor is all about. It serves as an important reminder that we need to come together as a community not out of necessity but out of love, kindness, and acceptance. All were traits that were clearly present at the Love Your Neighbor concert. If it wasn’t apparent in the proud way parents filmed their children performing and took pictures of friends, then it was in the way students and teachers both came together to spend the night with one another. Love Your Neighbor serves as an important reminder to be grateful for the wonderful people in our lives and to make an effort to come together not as associates but as friends.
