Looking Into Sadies Fashion

By Elin Mason and Mena Monroe

As “Hotel Room Service” by Pitbull blared at the new Civic Center, Vestavia Hills High School students sang their hearts out on the dance floor on that cool January night. The Sadie Hawkins Dance is an annual celebration where girls ask the boys to the dance. There are three school dances a year for juniors and seniors, and only two for freshmen and sophomores, meaning this dance is everyone’s chance to show off!

The first part of any look is the color. Since Sadies is during the winter months, students tend to stick with elegant and more mature colors. Additionally, since high schoolers tend to wear bolder colors at Homecoming, they stray away from neons (not to say some people still do not go for it) and lean more into neutrals. Black is always a staple of Sadies. Not only does black go with every accessory, black has always been thought of as a winter color. Similarly, the classy color red was also very popular this year in both dresses and shoes. Most students want to wear red at least once, making the color pretty desirable during both Homecoming and Sadies; however, darker reds or sub categories of reds like burgundy or maroon were chosen more for this dance. Additional trending colors ranged from champagne pink, forest green, pale blue, and moody purple. Aside from these specific colors, another trend has made a comeback. During 2021-2022, satin dresses took over, and while they are still popular and always will be, they have been falling back. This year, the new stars of Sadies were sequins and sparkles. Typically, if students wear shimmering dresses, they do so during Homecoming, but in 2023, there was a rise in the shine.

There has also been an interesting alteration in girls’ accessories, specifically the shoes! While students have typically stuck to traditional heels in past years, recently, girls have decided to add an extra embellishment to their outfit through their shoes. Certain heels had bows, extra straps, soft feathers, or even a smooth velvet strap on them. Once the girls got to the dance, many traded out their fashionable heels to a more comfortable, agile sneaker.

Looking back, guys often wore similar attire to all the school dances, but this year, there were noticeable, new trends seen. Many guys opted for a gray or navy jacket instead of the formal black suit that is commonly worn at prom. While most guys decided on the no-tie look, those that did wear a tie added personality to their outfit with striped or checkered patterns. A few juniors put on stylish sneakers instead of the classic brown dress shoes. There were even a few cowboy boots in the mix!

Regardless of what everyone wore to this year’s Sadie Hawkins Dance, this event is an amazing opportunity for all high school students to come together and celebrate. Students buy tickets that raise money for RISE (the spring charity benefiting the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center), eat at local restaurants, and take pictures to commemorate the evening. Some sophomores even chose to eat their dinner at the Civic Center itself! If provided the chance, please consider going to next year's Sadie Hawkins Dance.
