Fall is a time full of beloved traditions, cool weather, and time well-spent with friends and family. Calendar-wise, Fall runs from September 22nd to December 21st. Historically, writers, artists, and poets have used Fall to symbolize decline and decay. They used the patterns of nature and the annual falling of the leaves to describe feelings of slowness and transformation to less-lively times. However, I have come to find that Fall is just as much about newness as it is about slowing down.

This Fall brought the end of our regular Football season, but also the beginning of playoffs, and a chance to compete for a state title. This is the first time Vestavia has been to playoffs in nearly three years, and the excitement shows. SGA executives even spoke with administrators to create a special playoff pep rally, occurring this Friday, November 4th.

This season has also brought new traditions. A couple weeks ago, Vestavia put on its first Poetry Out Loud competition, where students memorized and recited poems for a chance to participate in a regional competition. The night brought spectacular performances of thought-provoking poems, and awarded our school representative a bid to regionals.

As the band competition came to an end, the students of the Rebel Marching Band were brought news of a new opportunity to look forward to: an invitation to perform in the Rome New Year’s Day Parade in 2024.

As the leaves change, I hope we can take time to acknowledge not only the close of an exciting time, but the beginnings of new eras, and the abundance of opportunities to take part in. Whether you spend Halloween creating new memories or watching an old movie, bring the ever-occurring change of old and new with you.

This issue has all the old traditions you love, but also might give you a new favorite Fall activity. From the West Carnival to the Children’s Hospital Halloween experience, I hope this issue helps you celebrate this very special holiday.

Happy Reading (and Halloween!)
