In the late 19th century, a few universities invited their alumni to hold a reunion at their first home football game of the season. That year, previous students of all ages returned to their alma mater, honoring forgotten traditions, reuniting with old companions, and starting the well-loved practice we know today as Homecoming. Although many schools argue that they were the first to start this tradition, it can be agreed that homecoming week is exciting for students all over the country, including those at Vestavia.

Here, homecoming week is a celebration of all things community, competition, and an ode to the school spirit that Vestavia houses like a badge of honor. I can say with a certain boldness that Vestavia takes pride in the ways we support each other, and our community. Whether it be the numerous events and dress-up opportunities where we show support for our competing teams, or the on-going effort to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis, it is palpable that our strength comes from each other.

This week, I hope you enjoyed every moment. It is so incredible that we are in a place where we can show up to school dressed as a traffic cone, spend a Wednesday night under the stadium lights of a powderpuff game, play basketball with our favorite teachers, and tear up the dance floor during a pep rally all within a few days. Weeks like these make us proud to call Vestavia home.

This drop covers the ins, outs, ups and downs of the past few weeks, but also gives an opportunity to learn about happenings around the school and community that have been occurring for years. I hope that with this drop, we can all learn to appreciate something new about the place we call home.

Happy Reading,

Sarah Dewees
