Last Friday, the Track and Field team competed at the Last Chance meet at the Birmingham Crossplex. Hence the name, this meet was the final indoor meet of the season before the AHSAA Indoor Track State meet which took place this past Friday, January 31st.
Entering the final week of the season, the boys' team was seeded second in the 7A AHSAA division while the girls were seeded seventh. Throughout the season, both teams have had remarkable statistics, with new personal records and season-best performances. These athletes have trained hard all season in their respective specialties; however, there is one group that has not received equal attention: the multi-event group. This small group trains for every category in Track and Field. From throws to sprints, mid-distance to jumps, these multi-event athletes finally had their chance to perform in the Last Chance Pentathlon.
On the 24th of January, athletes arrived at the Crossplex early in the morning. They competed in the following order of events: 60-meter hurdles, high jump/long jump, shot put, long jump/high jump, 800 meters/1k. After each event is finalized, they are given a 30-minute rest period, allowing them time to recover and reset for the next event. On the boys’ side, Vestavia was represented by junior Walker McInnis and freshman Fulton Heard. On the girls’ side, Vestavia was represented by senior Emily Spooner, senior Maddie Crawford, and junior Emily Jin.
The Rebels commenced the meet with a great performance in the 60m hurdles. Emily Spooner timed a PR of 10.17, starting her at 9th overall with 681 points. Walker McInnis finished the hurdles with the same time as Spooner, placing him at 9th overall as well with 509 points.
In the high jump, Maddie Crawford jumped 1.44 meters (4-8.75), moving her up three places overall to 11th. While the girls high jumped, the guys competed at the pits for the long jump with Heard recording a jump of 5.21 m (17-01.25), bringing him up to 15th overall.
Moving on, both teams were sent to shot put where Spooner threw a 9th place 7.20 m (23-07.50) while Heard threw 9.50 m (31-02.00).
The guys proceeded into the high jump with McInnis jumping a 7th place 1.67m (5-05.75). The girls carried on to the long jump where Crawford jumped a 4.58m (15-00.5).
