Kids Day: A Magical VHHS Tradition

A few of the many seniors who came together to dress up as beloved characters from various children’s films to fundraise and bring the community together.

This past Saturday at Vestavia Hills High School was a busy one, and one of the most exciting ones of the year. Starting at 9:00 a.m, families arrived at Kids Day at VHHS where they could participate in many different activities including Touch-a-Truck, grabbing a balloon animal, coloring, and even meeting their favorite characters from popular children’s films ranging from Barbie to Cinderella.

Kids Day is an event put on to raise money for RISE. RISE stands for Rebel Impact through Service and Engagement. RISE is a semester-long service-learning project sponsored by Youth Leadership Vestavia Hills and consists of countless opportunities for students including 300 committee positions that plan and execute community-wide events. In addition, over half the student body participates on RISE teams throughout the semester to raise funds and create awareness through service. This year, Kids Day included a character party with over eighty juniors and seniors dressed up to bring joy to members of the community. There were Disney princesses and Marvel superheroes and just about everything in between, and kids were invited to grab a picture with characters, interact with them, and even get an autograph!

There was Aladdin and Jasmine, Elena of Avalor, Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen, Moana, Mirabel and Isabela from Encanto, Snow White and her prince, Blippy, Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, Fancy Nancy, Buddy the Elf and Jovie, Olaf, Kristoff, Elsa, and Anna from Frozen, the Mad Hatter, Alice, and the Queen of Hearts, Woody, Jessie, Buzz Lightyear and BoPeep, Nemo and Dory, Sleeping Beauty, Lilo, Sofia the First, Cruella De Vil and her Dalmations, Belle, Hercules and Meg, Mulan, Merida, Glinda and Dorothy, Barbie and Ken, Minnie and Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, Fairy Godmother and Prince Charming, Silvermist, Rosetta, Iridessa, Ariel, Tinkerbell, Peter Pan, and Wendy in one gym. Meanwhile, another gym offered even more characters featuring the Incredibles and Edna Mode, Batman, Superman, Supergirl, the Flash, Green Lantern, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Rey, Wonder Woman, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Panther, Spiderman, Captain America, and Captain Marvel to name a few.

All of this could not happen without the Kids Day chairs, seniors Elizabeth Steele and Caroline Randall as well as all the other students who came to dress up or make a balloon animal! Every student that participated had a meaningful impact, and each job was essential to the success of the day.

While it is not known how much money this event raised for RISE, it was still a successful Saturday at VHHS no matter what, and the community came together to spread a little magic and message of hope.
