Joe Eshlemen: A Student Who Exceeds All Expectations

Vestavia Hills High School is known for its highly accomplished students who are active in both the school and the community. One student leader Pillar would like to recognize in particular is Joe Eshleman. Joe is a senior and plans to attend Auburn University next fall. He is involved in various activities that reflect his leadership abilities and astounding character.

Joe leads Vestavia Hills High School in a significant way through his position as a RISE head chairman. RISE stands for Rebel Impact through Service and Engagement. RISE is a semester-long service-learning project where hundreds of students come together to raise money for the Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Program at the UAB O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center. All throughout the spring semester, students plan many community events and fundraising activities to raise funds and create awareness through service. As a head chairman, Joe has many

responsibilities such as promoting RISE, facilitating events, speaking at luncheons, and fulfilling all needs such as writing thank you notes, finding sponsors, moving boxes, or anything else that makes the RISE fundraising season possible. Outside of his chairman responsibilities, Joe is additionally a member of Help the Hills, an organization made of juniors and seniors who pledge to live a healthy life free from harmful substances. With other Help the Hills members, Joe goes to middle schools to encourage middle schoolers not to drink and to help them with any isolation they may be feeling because of that. Joe Eshleman is a great example of what it means to lead by example.

Joe's leadership abilities do not stop there. Joe is also the Student Government Association Senior Class Director of Spirit. Joe assists at pep rallies, chooses themes for seniors to wear on spirit day, and ensures energy is abundant at sporting events, pep rallies, and any other Vestavia events. His position as Director of Spirit is clearly recognized by the senior class as he was voted “Student Section MVP” in the senior class superlatives election. Last year at a basketball game, Joe even dressed up as Moses and parted the “Red Sea” of students who were all wearing red attire. This incredible moment of school spirit and unity was video taped by an observer and went viral on social media. Needless to say, Joe is certainly a key component of the Vestavia Hills High School school spirit.

Not only is Joe loved by his peers, he is also highly viewed by his teachers. This year, Joe was selected as a Mr. Vestavia Nominee. Each year, multiple Mr. Vestavia and Miss Vestavia nominees are selected by the Vestavia Hills High School faculty. These students are thought to represent Vestavia in a positive way and are known to strive for excellence both inside and outside of the classroom. Teachers and students alike recognize the quality and character of Joe Eshleman.

Early in the fall, many senior boys in fifth period lunch grew bored of the extended senior lunch period. They began to bring games to keep them entertained, and over time, a simple game of spikeball turned into a full blown spikeball tournament. On championship day, the boys coordinated Vestavia Hills High School’s very own “Just Singin'” acapella group to sing the national anthem, and organized referees and announcers. Not once, but twice, Joe led his team to victory in the championship round.

Needless to say, Joe Eshleman has gone above and beyond as a student leader at Vestavia Hills High School. We look forward to seeing the great things he will accomplish in the future.
