If you have ever stepped foot inside Vestavia Hills High School you have probably heard of RISE, Rebel impact through Service and Engagement. RISE is everywhere in Vestavia! From the hallways at school, to local businesses, and social media… advertisements of goods and services surround you, it’s part of the culture here in Vestavia and YOU can and should be a part of it!
Headed by Youth Leadership Vestavia Hills, RISE is a school-wide, service-based fundraising effort which takes place during the second school semester. All profits benefit the Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology program of O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB. 2023 will be our fifth year of RISE and the theme this year is A Million Reasons. Why? This year our goal is $180,000 and if we reach our goal, we will have raised $1,000,000.00 over the last 5 years! That’s HUGE! Our fundraising has allowed the O’neal Comprehensive Cancer Center to treat many, including some of our very own students. The lives that Rebels have touched through their service is far spread and being able to say you are a part of that is a feeling that goes unmatched.
Now here’s the thing. The reason RISE has become such a success is because of the hundreds of VHHS students that step up each year and decide to be a part of something bigger than themselves. With the assistance of a few very amazing teachers, the students make RISE happen. So, how can you get involved?
First and foremost, EVERY VHHS student is encouraged to join a RISE team. Teams are responsible for the majority of RISE’s success. You can join a RISE team with your friends, or you can stop by room A241 where Mrs. Jones or Mrs. Prewitt will get you set up. Teams are pretty much given creative freedom to work together to fundraise and serve others. If desired, teams can sign up for a tent on RISE day as well. Teams are the best way to get involved. It is a chance for anyone to express their fundraising and service ideas and, with the help of teammates, make them happen!
Now if that’s not really your jam, or you're not a high school student, a good way to support RISE is to simply show up to some of the super fun events that are being held.
The Pinkies Up Tea Party on February 11th is a super fun event for children. From 9am to 11am, it’s a party with face painting, makeup, manicures, crafts, dancing, sing-a-longs, and of course, tea! What better way to spend a Saturday morning?
On March 4th, we have activities for both youngsters and adults! First, there is the Superhero Fun Run for 1st grade through 5th grade. This will be at 8:30am and kids will get to run and play with some of their favorite superheroes!! Then, at 10am, 6th graders through adults can participate in the 5k Rebel Color Run!! It’s a classic, and you don’t want to miss it! What better way to kick off Spring than exercise and color?!
On March 15th, there’s another one for the kids!! Kid’s Day is from 9am to 11am and it includes a parking lot full of cool emergency vehicles, trucks, and construction equipment along with your favorite Disney and superhero friends!! Come party with RISE!!
If you're a VHHS student, I'm sure you’ve heard about the Sadie Hawkins dance! On the evening of Saturday, January 28th, invite a date or show up with your friends and enjoy a Night Under the Stars!
Last but definitely not least, RISE DAY!!!! It’s arguably the most fun day of the year! On Saturday, April 15th from 4pm to 10pm, the community is invited to a festival of food, games, music, and a luminary ceremony honoring those who have fought the battle of cancer. RISE teams will be hosting tents where they will sell things or hold games… and you can't forget about the 3v3 basketball tournament! It’s an amazing and special night you don’t want to miss!
More information can be found on the RISE website and tickets can be purchased on GoFan. Throughout RISE, individual teams will be holding events, offering services, or selling goods in an effort to raise money and awareness! Make sure to keep an eye out and support these students!
So, young or old, this RISE season I encourage you to become a part of this extraordinary effort to support the fight against cancer. Come out and support our large RISE events. It's super fun and a great way to get involved in the Rebel community! High school students, you are strongly encouraged to join a RISE team and use your unique skills to make a difference. It’s never too late!!
Go Rebels, and GO RISE!!!
