An upperclassmen E-day, Friday off, and a short week all consecutive led to the most interesting Homecoming week in recent times.
Dress-up days are common for the 5 days preceding the famed Homecoming dance. This year, Vestavia enjoyed a very unique Homecoming week: the five usual dress-up days were split up across two three-day weeks. The week began with last Wednesday and Thursday’s themes and finished with the three schools days after returning from fall break.
Amid the busy month of October, including Halloween, Homecoming, and the many themed school days, finding a plethora of creative costumes can be a hassle. Over the past few weeks, many Vestavia students were found using their artistic talents to DIY unique outfits for the many complex themes.
A review of each day’s theme: Wednesday: Walk of Fame the Wildcats, Thursday: Time to Grow up T-County (Grandparents-seniors vs. babies-the other grades), Wednesday of the second week: Work the Wildcats, and Thursday: Tire out T-County (Talladega Nights/Pajamas). On Friday, each grade had their own theme. The Freshmen dressed up as different decades, the Sophomores were dressed in space attire, the Juniors in camo, Seniors in Disney getups, and the Band in PJs.
Walk of Fame the Wildcats was a great theme to kick off the week of celebration. The theme allowed for many interpretations, with some dressing as popular sports and music celebrities and others dressing as famous movies, games, or television characters.
Upon questioning Vestavia students, the final Friday before the Homecoming dance seemed to be the favorite among many. Opposing themes for each group helped gather pride for each grade, and distinguished the ages as they adorned themselves with similar outfits.
Time to Grow Up T-County was the most controversial dress-up day, as many had different positive and negative opinions of it. The seniors enjoyed the day, dressing up in nightgowns, wigs, and canes. The other classes did not enjoy dressing up as babies, deeming it “another pajama day.”
Many believed that Tire out T-County was a fun day, as it gave a wide variety of choices of outfits. With a conjoined theme of Talladega Nights styles and pajamas, students enjoyed being able to pick which theme to adhere to. Although many opted for a break from the complex outfits and showed up in their sleeping clothes, a few students stepped in with movie replicas of racing suits. Some even combined the two options, showing up in pajama pants and Talladega Nights t-shirts. Overall, Homecoming week was a success and many chose to participate. The week definitely built up a lot of excitement towards the dance!
