On October 18th, Vestavia Hills wrapped up its exciting and somewhat unconventional homecoming week. Despite starting dress-up themes more than a week before, students were dressed up in their best outfits on Friday. Freshmen wore throwback outfits like gogo dresses and hippie costumes, while sophomores were ready for space travel as they dressed up as astronauts and aliens. The juniors were difficult to spot in their camouflage gear. The seniors brought the magic to the pep rally by dressing up as Disney characters. As per tradition, the senior-class girls wore matching Dalmatian costumes, taking inspiration from Disney’s famous 101 Dalmatians.
Being a longer pep rally, the students were able to watch all of their peers perform. They saw performances from the Rockettes, Rebelettes, football cheerleaders, basketball cheerleaders, Color Guard, and Majorettes. Vestavia’s principal, Dr. Inabinet, and the Freshman Campus’s principal, Mr. Mann, even made a special appearance during the Rebelette’s performance.
The highly anticipated homecoming king winner was also announced during the pep rally. This year, Vestavia had five wonderful candidates, who spent the season raising money for EQUIP. In the end, and for the second year in a row, the freshman candidate was crowned homecoming king. Jake Cesnick hosted fundraising events at Taco Mama, Davenports, and Doodles to win the crown. His homecoming queen was announced at the homecoming football game that night.
The football captains of the night were all seniors: Carson Mann, Eli Rooks, Larry McSwain Jr., and Logan Richter. Coach Evan’s introduced them, and together they encouraged students to attend the game with a riveting speech.
A newer tradition, the homecoming dance off was still a hit for students. Each class cheered on their representatives as they danced to songs like FEIN by Travis Scott and Lip Gloss by Lil Mama to try and stay in the game. Each dancer was entertaining and certainly made the audience laugh. This year there were two winners! Bailey Shepherd from the senior class was one of them. She arrived onto the court ready and dressed as Cruelle Deville, but at various points throughout the competition, she stripped off her accessories and tossed them into the crowd. Speaking before the game, Bailey said she was “nervous but hype” and was just going to “go for it, I guess.” The senior class cheered loudly when she did the splits and was announced as a winner.
There was a lot of school spirit from every class at this pep rally! However, it was the band who ultimately won the spirit stick! In conclusion, the homecoming pep rally was a perfect celebration of school spirit, unity, and excitement. The event showcased what makes Vestavia special—camaraderie, friendly competition, and pride in being part of something bigger than yourself.
