Helena vs. Vestavia Game

Last week, on Thursday, November 2, hundreds of Rebels came to support the football team in the Helena vs. Vestavia Game. Students and parents donned Hawaiian shirts, leis, and blankets despite the freezing weather nearing 47 ℉ at the Reynolds Stadium. Nevertheless, they weren’t disappointed: Vestavia absolutely destroyed Helena with a score of 44-0. In fact, Vestavia’s head coach Robert Evans confidently reported that, “Helena is a quality opponent, and they had a couple guys out, but this is a step-up in competition. They haven’t played anybody like us and that showed up tonight.”

At the start of the game, John Paul Head managed to score a touchdown leading the Vestavia team to a score of 7-0. And with another 53-yard touchdown, Chase Webb and Head proceeded to bring the score to 14-0 as the first quarter closed. In the 2nd quarter, Vestavia only widened the lead after Owen Simpson’s 35-yard field goal and Caden Taylor’s 4-yard touchdown which put Vestavia at a score of 24-0 at halftime.

For the halftime show, both schools presented spectacular performances. Helena started off by performing their show, “Out of this World: A Journey Into Space” which surrounded the theme of outer space. Inspired by the music from several films, their repertoire drew from movies like “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “Treasure Planet,” “October Sky,” “Star Trek Into Darkness” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” After them, the VHHS Marching Band presented their show called “Nobody Does it Better” that features several soundtracks from James Bonds movies including “Nobody Does it Better,” “No Time to Die,” “Skyfall,” and “Welcome to Cuba.” Despite the freezing temperatures, both teams awed audiences with their performances.

At the start of the third quarter, John Paul Head rushed another touchdown with Carson Purdy scoring another touchdown soon after him bringing the score to 38-0. The final points of the game were scored in the fourth quarter by Charlie Taaffe with a 77-yard run. According to Vestavia Voice, the Rebels ran a total of 471 yards compared to the Huskies’ 207 total yards throughout the game.

To cap off the season, Vestavia finishes with a 8-2 record having only lost to Hewitt-Trussville and Thompson. As the third seed from Class 7A, Region 3, Vestavia will play at the AHSAA 7A State Tournament in Decatur on Friday, November 10. Come out and support the Rebels! As always, go Rebels!
