Valentine’s Day—a day dedicated to love. And chocolate hearts, red roses, pink outfits. In Kindergarten there’s candy in everyone’s bag, and in high school, there’s singing Valentines. Nowadays, love is associated with everything from the color red to Cupid. People write Valentines to their loved ones or just their friends. The tradition goes all the way back to 1415 in Europe when the Duke of Orleans wrote one to his wife after being captured after a battle. The name Valentine can be traced back to Saint Valentine in Rome. Even the well-known image of Cupid dates back to the Roman god Cupid, similar to the Greek god of love, Eros. All that being said, Valentine’s Day wasn’t just created out of the human desire for celebration and candy. While, sadly, school does not close to commemorate love for one another, Valentine’s Day offers an oasis of activities amid the cold, desolate winter. And since Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday this year, I encourage everyone to do something. We live in Alabama, so we can go outside without freezing! You could have a party and make smores with heart-shaped marshmallows, watch movies, or go out for dinner. You could be extra nice to your mom or give someone a jar with 50 reasons you love them. You could bring a bunch of candy to school and feed everyone in your classes. Or… hear me out… you can wait until the day after and buy discounted themed candy at the store. Either way, Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be full of grand gestures. Love isn't about the showy bouquet of 1000 roses or the amount of candy hearts you get. Love is the constant decision to put someone else before yourself—not just on Valentine’s Day but also in front of the internet or out in public.
