Group Highlight: Vestavia Ambassadors

You’ve probably seen the Ambassadors in action before. Whether it was during the first few days of school or at graduation last May, the Vestavia Ambassadors have been the face of VHHS and Vestavia for years. Vestavia Ambassadors lead, serve, and represent the community regardless of whether they’re on or off duty.

My name’s Anusha, and I’ve been an Ambassador since the spring of 2022. This article is here to guide you as the 2023 Ambassador selection process rolls around! If you’re thinking of applying to become an Ambassador, first ask yourself whether you think you’d be a good fit for the program. You should be dedicated to serving the community, and a good candidate for representing Vestavia. It’s also imperative that you find time throughout the year to work as an Ambassador. Being a part of the program means that you should pull your weight by volunteering for at least a few events during the year.

That being said, there’s always going to be an opportunity to help out. Just a few weeks after I became an Ambassador, we were all asked to serve at the Class of 2022’s graduation ceremony! Then, a summer later, we were tasked with guiding students in the halls during the first week of school. Throughout the fall and winter months, we were invited to help at a myriad of school and community events, including Celebrate the Season, the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, and more.

Each year, the Ambassadors also take on a service project, and this year’s project involved spending a Saturday morning at the Love in Action Food Distribution Center. We were all delegated tasks such as filling up baskets with food and other treats, as well as handing them over to families. I loved this project because it was a hands-on experience of serving people in need, and I could feel a real impact of our work.

As the spring months arrive, the Ambassadors are looking forward to even more opportunities. RISE is in full swing, and we’ve already been requested to assist at several RISE-related community events. And as the school year comes to close, serving at graduation is also on our agenda.

Of course, there’s more to being an Ambassador than service—we host our own events and parties throughout the year too. During our meetings, there are often savory snacks to munch on while our officers talk about upcoming events, and once, we even had a quick karaoke session! At our annual Halloween Party, we split into teams to participate in the Pumpkin Decorating Contest. Our team was just a couple votes away from first place… we were robbed. In addition, we have Friendsgiving each year, and of course, the Ambassador juniors host a banquet in the spring to thank our seniors!

If this sounds like a program you’d love, you should definitely apply. Attend one of four mandatory interest meetings on January 24 or 26, at 7:45 AM or 3:35 PM, in Mr. Bittinger’s room (A247). There, you’ll receive all the details about the selection process. I hope this article helped, and if you do end up applying, I wish you the best of luck!
