First Priority: A Place to be Found.

Writer: Emily JinEmily Jin

What is First Priority? First Priority is a national organization that strategically aims to be a lighthouse to all teenagers, no matter what season of life they are in. The club has branches at Louis Pizitz Middle School, the Freshman campus, and many more in the Birmingham area; however, there has yet to be an appearance at Vestavia Hills High School until now. The club was recently approved at the high school, and the first leadership meeting was held on March 5th, 2025. With teacher liaison Mrs. Smith and supervisor Savannah Barnett from Mountain Top Church, the club was officially alive.

First Priority’s target is teenagers, with the goal to give them hope and a safe place in their difficult years of high school and middle school. The season of being a teenager is hard and comes with unique challenges for every individual, but even in the storm, there is hope. First Priority is a gateway for Christian teenagers to express and share their faith at their school. It is a vessel for students to care for students. It is the ministry in schools.

The club at Vestavia Hills High School meets every first and third Wednesday of each month. The first Wednesday is for the leadership team, and the third Wednesday is for everyone and anyone. In the first meeting, the leadership team meets to organize and plan the next meeting, distributing roles and responsibilities. Meeting at 7:50 am every time, the club has only about 25 minutes to go through everything; however, this past third Wednesday, the open meeting went smoothly. Beginning with prayer, the club welcomed all who were able to join. After, they continued with a trivia game with candy, filling the room with laughter and joy. Then, the main message was shared with a focus on evangelism and the statement, “I am fully known by You, Lord.” Providing steps and explanations of how to evangelize, what to share, and the why we do, the message was taken to heart by many of those in the room as the audience's eyes and ears eagerly gave their attention. As the meeting came to an end, we ended with prayer and reminders.

We invite anyone and everyone to come join us on the third Wednesday of every month. Whether you might be going through a difficult phase in life or if you are simply free that Wednesday, anyone is welcome just as Jesus welcomes us all, no matter what our background might be, what our past looks like, and the wrongs we have committed. He welcomes us, and we welcome you.
