Fall Charity Kickoff Assembly

With Homecoming closer than ever, the Fall Charity Kickoff Assembly was held on Wednesday, September 18th. VHHS has never been lacking when it comes to supporting local causes, as seen in the impressive donations previously made to the Amelia Center in 2021 and Libby’s Friends just last year. It’s safe to say that expectations are sky-high for this year’s charity, Equip.

Equip Services is an organization that provides individuals with disabilities with vocational, life, and social skill instruction. It was founded in 2018, operates in Shelby County, and has served countless high school students since its inception. Equip has developed a curriculum made specifically for students living with disabilities, and its certified instructors deliver it weekly at local high schools.

Beyond high school, Equip has a day program – Thrive, that helps adults with disabilities who are seeking jobs. They advocate for employees with disabilities and help them with job opportunities and maintaining their careers. This can include, but is not limited to, doing college tours, work-based learning trips, social groups, and mock interviews.

Their work does not end there, though. Exceptional Baits is another service under Equip that provides for individuals with disabilities. These individuals are trained to work with fishing lures to help them get started with their occupational lives and get the skills they need.

As we do with every fall charity, our Homecoming King nominees from each grade, plus the band, will be lobbying for donations to support Equips. The nominee with the most donations will be crowned VHHS Homecoming King! This year’s nominees are as follows:

Sophomore Class: William Hurt

Junior Class: Will Ainsworth

Senior Class: Emory Carver

Band: Tad Boryczka

After votes are all tallied up, the Homecoming King will be announced at the pep rally the day of the Homecoming game (Friday, October 18), following which comes the much-awaited Homecoming dance.  Amidst all the excitement around the Homecoming game and dance, let’s not forget that we, as a school, are doing this for a cause. A cause that can and will continue to change the lives of students and adults with disabilities and our local community as a whole. As important as school events are to us as students, the money we raise and the support that we show are just as important to organizations like Equip. So go all out picking your homecoming outfits and planning out your pictures! Just remember to bring that same energy to raising money for Equip!
