Faculty Highlight: Tracey Towns

It’s that time of year for meetings with your counselor on the classes you are planning on taking next year! Or perhaps you are walking into the counselors’ department to have a meeting with a college counselor or check in on the scholarship bin. Maybe you need to use their printers for your ginormous research essay because your printer broke down at your house last night. Whatever it may be, there is always a welcoming face at the front desk in the guidance department, and that would be Mrs. Tracey Towns!

How did Mrs. Towns end up working at the front desk in the guidance office? She had grown up going to Mountain Brook City Schools, and she knew even from a young age that she loved kids and was interested in becoming a teacher of some sorts. She went to Auburn University for college and majored in Early Childhood Education. She then began to sub at Vestavia, and the principal at the time asked her if she was interested in becoming a full time staff member! She has taught at Vestavia for 11 years, and her mom was even a teacher here!

What does Mrs. Towns’ family life look like? She is married and has two sons, one of whom is a freshman at Auburn and one who just got married! Her family has a golden doodle named Molly and a cat named Lucy. She also has one brother and a niece and nephew who are currently enrolled in Vestavia Hills City Schools.

One of the most important parts of a school is its school spirit, and it is evident that Vestavia Hills High School goes above and beyond in school spirit. Our school also has many different incredible opportunities available for students to participate in, and I asked Mrs. Towns what her favorite Vestavia events were. She said she loved pep rallies at Vestavia, as well as football games and baseball games (especially because her kids played in them once). She also is a big fan of RISE, and when asked why, she explained how there are so many ways that “all the kids can participate and get involved.” I’m sure many staff members and students would have to agree with Mrs. Towns on this one!

So what can the guidance department even help us with? Yes, obviously they help with class schedules, but what ELSE? Mrs. Towns shared that the counselors are here for ANY of our needs. One of their main responsibilities is answering questions about college and class schedules, but they also want to hear if you have something going on at home that may be affecting you in a negative way. Additionally, they just want to talk to you and get to know you! We truly have such an incredible guidance department at Vestavia! What are some other fun facts about Mrs. Towns? Impressively, Mrs. Towns and her mom played tennis in the US Open in New York! She grew up playing tennis and was even #1 in the state! Her mom was the tennis coach at Vestavia for over 10-15 years. Vestavia definitely has a strong and talented tennis team! She still plays tennis to this day in her free time! Additionally, she loves to indulge in some seafood and Italian food!

Make sure to stop by the counselors’ office every once in a while, and say hi to Mrs. Towns! She is such a smiling, welcoming face for anyone, and she is there to direct you to whatever counselor you may need!
