The VHHS cross country team had its Sectionals race on October 31, 2024, in Trussville, Alabama. At Sectionals, athletes compete to qualify for the state meet, which will take place on November 9. The state meet will be held in Oakville, Alabama. Vestavia has already run two races on the state course throughout this season, so Rebel athletes will be in familiar territory come the competition.
The boys’ and girls’ teams both qualified for the state meet, with the girls finishing second and the boys finishing first. All teams that finish in the top four qualify for the state meet, and the top six runners—excluding the athletes who qualified for state with their team—qualify as well. In addition to Vestavia’s teams, Hoover High School’s, Oak Mountain High School’s, and Hewitt Trussville’s boys and girls teams qualified for the state meet in the 7A division. These teams and Vestavia’s teams will compete against schools from other sectional competitions at the state competition.
Both Rebel teams’ top ten runners competed. The runners for the girls were Anna James Litty, Riley Zeanah, Abby Allen, Millie Black, Angela Zhang, Avery Grace, Olivia Carroll, Claire Spooner, Kendall Feild, and Kate McKinnon. The two alternates were Genevieve Gammill and Jasmine Zhang. The girls ran at 9:30 a.m. following the 6A girls. Anna James Litty and Riley Zeanah finished third and eighth overall, respectively. The girls scored a total of 52 points.
The runners for the boys included John Hayes, Jackson Mize, Ethan Meadows, Mitchell Schaaf, James Bentley, Ezra Booher, Daniel Johnson, Wilson Holt, Drew Morris, and Mason Thompson. The two alternates for the boys were Davis Witt and Asa Stout. John Hayes, Jackson Mize, and Ethan Meadows finished second, fourth, and tenth overall in that order. The boys scored a total of 41 points.
The cross country team will set off for Oakville on Friday, November 8, and will stay the night leading up to the championship race. The girls’ team will race at 11:10 p.m. and the boys’ team will race at 12:15 p.m. on November 9th, 2024.
Come out and support your cross country team! Make sure to wish the runners the best of luck as they prepare for the championship meet of the season!
