College Fair and Advice from Alabama and Auburn

On Thursday, February 15, VHHS hosted their annual College Fair, a place where universities and programs across the South sent representatives to visit our school. From shampoo to stickers to even hand sanitizer, these representatives brought hundreds of pamphlets to convince and inform students about the opportunities and the application process found on their campuses. The event was an amazing opportunity for current seniors to decide their college decision while also giving juniors the chance to look ahead at their senior year. The following schools or programs came to visit:

  • Air Force

  • Marine Corp

  • National Guard

  • Thompson Tractor

  • August University

  • University of Montevallo

  • University of North Alabama

  • University of South Alabama

  • University of Southern Mississippi

  • University of West Alabama

  • Wofford College

  • University of Mississippi

  • University of Alabama in Huntsville

  • University of Alabama in Birmingham

  • Tuskegee University

  • Troy University

  • Shelton State Community College

  • Sewanee University of the South

  • Samford University

  • Mississippi State University

  • Mississippi College

  • Huntington College

  • Jacksonville State University

  • Jefferson State Community College

  • Lawson State Community College

  • Maryville College

  • Mercer University

  • University of Alabama

  • Birmingham Southern College

  • Belmont University

  • Austin Peay State University

  • Auburn University at Montgomery

Two of the most popular colleges that came to visit were Auburn University and The University of Alabama. Here was some of the advice that they would give for current students considering their schools:

Why Should I Pick Auburn University?

Auburn is a really small and close-knit community with just over 30,000 students. The campus and the community around it are very close and often support each other with different jobs and internship opportunities. We’re a lot like a family, and it’s really easy to see people you know just while walking from class to class and in hallways because of the small campus.

Advice for Current Juniors from Auburn:

  1. Over the summer, get on all the websites of all the schools that you are interested in.

  2. Look at the dates and deadlines for scholarships and applications. Make sure that you will admit all of the admissions deadlines, housing deadlines, etc.

  3. Visit the campus! This is the most important way for students to see if the school is the right fit for them. Answer the question: can I imagine myself here?

Why should I pick University of Alabama?

The University of Alabama is the public flagship university of Alabama, and we have a rich history of making champions (“Where Legends are Made”). We’re only located around 45 minutes away from Birmingham, so it’s very easy to travel to a very different and diverse community that still isn’t far from home. We have over 70 majors with lots of opportunities to pick up a dual major or multiple minors with several different career paths. UA also has over 600 student organizations, so there are so many opportunities to get involved in these niche communities. We have very vibrant Greek Life and other organizations that can really make it easy to find your family in our large community. We have a great Career Center after graduation that helps students connect with internships, jobs, and study-abroad programs around the world that students can go explore even while taking classes. We truly have the opportunities to make every one of our students a legend.

Advice for Current Juniors from Alabama:

  1. Come on campus visits! If you’re considering any college, take your family, friends, and support system to go see if the environment is right for you. Don’t pick a college if you haven’t visited it and don’t know what it’s like.

  2. The UA application opens early into your senior year, so make sure you start early!

  3. Your UA application is also your scholarship application, so make sure you’re as detailed as possible to tell us about everything that you’re involved in outside of school.
