Vestavia Hills High School clubs have returned! On Wednesday, September 14, clubs convened for their first meeting of the 2022-2023 school year. As soon as the clock struck 9:55 a.m. on Wednesday morning, students exited their 2nd period classrooms and scrambled to find their club locations. FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) on the 3rd floor of H hall when your 2nd period was science on the 1st floor of A hall? Unfortunately, you’ve got a long trek ahead of you to the other side of the school.
From the American Sign Language Club to the Young Politicians Club, there are over 40 clubs to join and be a part of. We welcome a few new clubs this year, including the Economics Club, the Gardening Rebels Club, the World Records Club, and Student Advisory. Some of our largest clubs this year include the Rebel Up Club, the Literacy Club, Boys’ FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), Girls’ FCA, the Ultimate Frisbee Club, and 1Bham Service Club.
The Thursday after club meetings, I surveyed a few students from various clubs about their experiences with first club meetings and how they went. Here are some of their responses:
“The Spanish Club meeting was really exciting! We had some galletos [cookies] from La Conchita, and they were really good. Overall, we just discussed the roles of different officers and committees and how club participation is important. We also voted on shirt designs and talked about volunteering at Fiesta Birmingham. I’m really excited about what other events we will be doing throughout the year!” - Madeline Rubery, junior and member of the Spanish Club
“I’m in the World Records Club! We met on the Senior Patio and were led by our fearless leader, Benjamin Keene. He had a presentation ready to explain to us how our club would work. I was very impressed with his leadership and forethought he gave to our club. He was very prepared and had a lot of thoughts for the year. I can’t wait to see what records we break this year!” - Livi Cate Osborne, senior and member of the World Records Club
“Clubs were good! Our club [the Sisterhood Project] has a lot of people, and we got to talk about body positivity, which is really relatable to a lot of people, I think. I was a freshman in it last year, and they went over to the Freshman campus for clubs. I’m looking forward to getting to know some of the upperclassmen in the Sisterhood Project this year.” - Addison Ringer, sophomore and member of the Sisterhood Project
“The first German Club meeting was really nice! We all got together and talked about expectations for the club. We played a Kahoot about Haribo, the German gummy bear brand, and ate gummy bears. We are having elections for officers at the next meeting.” - Natalie Turnage, senior and member of the German Club
“My first club meeting was really cool. I’m part of the Knitting and Crocheting Service Club. We met up and talked about rules in the club and how everyone needs to have a project they are working on. I was the only one who already had a project. I am making a scarf… A lot of the kids don’t know how to knit or crochet though, so we’re going to get knitting kits. My mom is going to come in two weeks and show everyone how to crochet, so that’s going to be pretty cool.” - Tom Burrus, sophomore and member of the Knitting and Crocheting Service Club
“It was lots of fun! We talked about our goals for the school year, including a canned food drive, teacher appreciation gifts, and an eyeglass drive. We will have elections at our next meeting. I’m super excited for this year, and I can’t wait to serve and raise money for those who need it.” - Grace Kingrey, junior and member of Leo Club
Clubs are always on Wednesdays, and the next two club meetings will be on September 21 and September 28. After that, clubs will meet once a month on October 26, November 9, December 7, January 25, February 8, March 8, and lastly, April 26.
